Pirates win two league games
The Prairie Pirates won a pair of league games last week as they held off Kamiah 63-58 on Thursday, Jan. 14 at Cottonwood and then won at Moscow over Logos 62-46 Saturday, Jan. 16.
Vs. Kamiah
In a showdown for second place in the league, Prairie trailed for only 18 seconds against Kamiah.
The Kubs scored first but 18 seconds later Cole Schlader scored a lay-up to tie it. A little over a minute later Prairie took the lead for good when Schlader converted a 3-point play to make it 5-2.
After Kamiah pulled within 1, Zach Rambo made a free throw and then scored a lay-up to make it 8-4. Schlader followed with a drive to the hoop to make it 10-4.
Not long after, Schlader picked up his second foul and went to the bench.
After a Kamiah basket, Brody Hasselstrom made the first of what would be 4 first half 3-pointers, to make it 13-6.
After a pair of Kamiah baskets, Rambo finished off the first quarter scoring when he scored a lay-up to make it 15-10.
Kamiah opened the second quarter scoring but Prairie answered with a basket by Tyler Wemhoff and Hasselstrom’s second 3 of the game.
After another Kamiah basket, Hasselstrom hit another 3. At that point he was 3 for 3 from the field, all of which were 3-pointers.
Rambo followed with a basket to make it 25-14.
The Kubs scored a pair of free throws when Schlader picked up his third foul with 3:05 left in the half.
Lane Schumacher hit a 3 and Hasselstrom followed with his fourth 3 of the half for a 31-16 lead with 2:03 left to play.
Kamiah answered with a 3 of their own and added a basket to pull within 31-21 at the half.
Schlader started the second half and after a Kubs basket, converted a 3-point play. Kamiah scored a pair of baskets to cut the lead to 7 at 34-27 but Schlader answered with a pair of free throws.
15 seconds later Schlader picked up his fourth foul and went to the bench for the rest of the quarter.
Kamiah then put together a 1-8 run to cut the lead down to 2 at 37-35 with 3:09 left in the third.
Schumacher broke the run with a basket and followed with a pair of free throws. Rambo added 2 free throws to push the lead back to 8 at 43-35.
After a Kamiah basket, Hasselstrom hit his fifth 3-pointer of the game to give Prairie a 46-37 lead.
A Prairie foul as the quarter ended gave Kamiah 2 free throws to make it 46-39 heading into the fourth.
A pair of Kamiah baskets pulled the kubs within 3 at 46-43 but Rambo answered with a 3-point play.
After Kamiah again cut the lead to 3 at 50-47, Schlader sank both ends of a double bonus.
Kamiah answered but Rambo converted a 3-point play to put the lead back at 6, 55-49.
3 times, Kamiah scored to cut the lead to 4 but each time Prairie answered. Rambo with a drive for a lay-up, Wemhoff with 2 free throws and then a free throw by Kyle Schwartz and 2 by Rambo to make it 62-58 with 1:46 left.
A free throw and a basket by the Kubs got them within 4 again but they got no closer as Wemhoff closed out the scoring with a free throw for a 5-point win.
Rambo wound up with 20 points to lead the scoring while Hasselstrom added 15 on five 3-pointers.
Schlader scored 14 despite being on the floor for less than a full quarter due to foul trouble. He was efficient while he was playing though as he was 4 for 5 from the field and 6 for 6 at the line.
Schumacher scored 7, Wemhoff 6 and Schwartz 1.
Kamiah had a 32-38 edge on the boards. Wemhoff led the Pirates with 9 rebounds while Schumacher had 7.
Wemhoff, Schwartz, Rambo and Schumacher each had a steal and Wyatt Ross had 4 assists.
Prairie was 18 for 48 from the field, 38%, and 21 for 29 at the line, 72%. Kamiah was 24 for 55 from the field, 44%, and 9 for 17 at the line, 53%.
Kamiah won the JV game 30-38 with the second quarter being the difference.
The Kubs outscored the Pirates 2-10 in the second quarter and that gave them their margin of victory.
Prairie got on the board first in the game as Travis Alfrey made 2 free throws. Kamiah answered with 2 baskets but Prairie tied it on a lay-up by Lee Forsmann.
Kamiah then took the lead for good with a 3-pointer. Shane Hanson scored to make it 6-7 at the end of the first quarter.
Kamiah started the second quarter with a 0-8 run as Prairie was scoreless until Hanson made a lay-up with 2:05 left in the half. Kamiah added another basket for an 8-17 halftime lead.
The Kubs extended the lead to 13 with a pair of baskets to open the second half. Prairie then put together a 9-2 run to cut the lead down to 6. Forsmann had a pair of baskets in the run with Colton McElroy converted a 3-point play and Levi Walsh a putback.
Kamiah then score to take a 17-25 lead into the fourth quarter.
Twice in the fourth quarter Prairie was able to get within 4 points. The first at 23-27 as they opened the quarter with a 6-2 run with Forsmann scoring 4 of those 6 points and Weston Riener the other 2.
Kamiah answered with a 0-5 run but a 3-pointer and then a lay-up by Forsmann again cut the lead to 4 at 28-32 with 1:50 to play.
A 0-6 run by Kamiah then put the game away with Hanson scoring just before the buzzer for the final 8 point margin.
Forsmann wound up with 15 points and 12 rebounds to lead the team in both categories. Hanson scored 6 with McElroy scoring 4 and Alfrey, Walsh and Riener each scored 2.
Kamiah had a 33-36 rebounding edge.
Alfrey had 4 steals and 3 assists.
Prairie was 11 for 39 from the field, 28%, and 7 for 16 at the line, 44%. Kamiah was 15 for 50 from the field, 30%, and 3 for 10 at the line, 30%.

At Logos
On Saturday afternoon the Pirates traveled to Logos where they handed the Knights a 62-46 loss. Cole Schlader scores 2 of his 29 points at Logos.
Scoring-wise the first quarter was Schlader against Logos as Schlader scored all 9 of Prairie’s first quarter points. Logos scored first and led again at 7-8 before Schlader closed out the first quarter scoring with 2 free throws which put Prairie ahead to stay.
Schlader made it 11-8 with 2 free throws to open the second quarter. After a Logos basket, Rambo joined Schlader in the scoring column with 2 free throws.
After 2 Logos free throws, Prairie had a 6-0 run as Rambo, Wemhoff and Schlader each scored a basket for a 19-12 lead.
2 baskets by Rambo sandwiching 2 free throws by Schlader gave Prairie a 25-16 lead with 1:31 left in the half.
Logos added a 3-pointer to make it 25-19 at the break.
Logos scored a 3-point play to open the third quarter and pull within 3 points but the rest of the quarter belonged to the Pirates as Prairie outscored Logos 26-11 the rest of the quarter. Schlader scored 12 of those 26 points with Ross and Schumacher each scoring 5 and Rambo 4 as Prairie took a 51-33 lead into the fourth quarter.
Prairie didn’t have any big scoring runs in the quarter. The biggest was a 7-0 run on a basket each by Ross and Schumacher and a 3 by Schlader.
Ross opened the fourth quarter scoring then Logos put together a 4-13 run to cut the Pirates lead down to 57-46. Prairie then scored the game’s final 5 points at the free throw line with Schumacher and Schlader scoring 2 each and Ross picking up the other one.
Schlader equaled his season high for points with 29. He also had a double-double with a team-high 19 rebounds.
Rambo added 14 points with Schumacher scoring 9, Ross 8 and Wemhoff 2.
Prairie dominated the boards 44-25 with Wemhoff adding 9 rebounds and Ross 7.
Wemhoff had 3 steals and Schlader had 5 assists.
Prairie was 22 for 58 from the field, 38%, and 14 for 17 at the line, 82%. Logos was 16 for 50 from the field, 32%, and 9 for 9 at the line.
Prairie is now 9-2 on the season and 5-1 in league play.
Prairie also won the JV game as Prairie came from behind for a 53-34.
The game didn’t start well for Prairie as Logos took leads of 0-8 and 3-13 in the first quarter.
Prairie started a rally in the final 3 minutes of the quarter when McElroy scored  and Forsmann followed with a putback. After a 3 by Logos, Hanson scored at the buzzer to make it 9-16.
Hanson hit a short bank shot to open the second and Riener followed with a 3-pointer. McElroy drove to the hoop for a basket at the 1:58 mark to tie the game at 16.
Logos scored their only points of the quarter with 45 seconds left and Morgan Poxleitner answered 15 seconds later to tie the score at 18 which is where it stood at halftime.
Prairie took their first lead 40 seconds into the second half when Walsh stole the ball and scored. Forsmann followed with a 3-point play and Hanson scored a putback for a 25-18 lead.
Logos managed to cut the lead back to 2 at 28-26 after a 3-pointer but Prairie responded with a 6-0 run. Alfrey scored on a drive, Hanson scored a putback and Alfrey scored on a feed from McElroy to make it 34-26.
Prairie led 38-30 after 3 quarters.
Logos hit a 3 to open the fourth but Prairie then scored the next 13 straight points to put the game away. Forsmann scored 5, Hanson 4 and Noah Behler and Riener 2 each in that run that made it 51-33 with 1:33 to play.
Logos broke the run with a free throw but Poxleitner ended the scoring with a basket with 28 seconds left.
Hanson and Forsmann both had double-doubles. Hanson led in both scoring and rebounds with 14 points and 20 rebounds while Forsmann scored 12 and had 15 rebounds. McElroy and Riener each scored 7 while Alfrey scored 5, Poxleitner 4 and Walsh and Behler 2 each.
As you would imagine with 2 guys accounting for 35 rebounds, Prairie dominated the boards 52-31.
Walsh had 5 steals and Alfrey had 4 assists.
Prairie was 23 for 61 from the field, 38%, and 6 for 13 at the line, 46%. Logos was 13 for 55 from the field, 24%, and 2 for 6 at the line, 33%.
