beat Grangeville 49-42
The Prairie Pirates gained a season split with Grangeville as they held off the Bulldogs 49-42 Tuesday, Jan. 22 at Cottonwood. Grangeville jumped out to a 3-9 lead but Prairie answered back with 2 free throws by Tyler Forsmann and a 3-pointer by David Sigler to pull within 1 at 8-9 by the end of the first quarter. Grangeville opened the second quarter scoring but Prairie ran off 8 straight points to take the lead for good. A steal by Devin Schmidt led to a basket by Kyle Daly. Prairie then pounded the offensive boards, putting up 3 shots before Branden Waller put the ball in the hoop to give Prairie their first lead at 12-11. Waller then drove the lane for a basket and Schmidt scored a putback to make it 16-11. Grangeville was able to pull back within 1 late in the quarter at 20-19 but Waller scored a pair of free throws with 1 second left to give Prairie a 22-19 halftime lead. Grangeville scored first in the third quarter but a 10-2 run by the Pirates with 6 of those points by Sigler, put Prairie in control. Sigler added another 3-pointer late in the quarter then Schmidt took over the scoring as he scored Prairie’s next 8 points on 3 lay-ups and a jumper from the elbow. The last of those put Prairie up 43-29 with 7:06 left to play. Prairie had their biggest lead at 16 with 4:32 left then went more to working the clock than trying to score. Prairie’s final points came with 2:46 left when Waller drove down the left side of the lane for a lay-up that made it 49-34. Grangeville tried to rally in the final minutes as they scored the game’s final 8 points, several off of turnovers, but Prairie had put them into too big a hole to climb out. A big key for the Pirates was holding Grangeville’s Nels Solberg to just 7 points after he had scored 20 on 10 for 10 shooting in their first matchup. Also Grangeville’s high scoring guard, Austin Wassmuth, took himself out of the picture with foul trouble as he picked up his third foul early in the second quarter and played less than a minute of the third before picking up his fourth. Sigler led the Pirates in scoring with 16 points while Waller, who didn’t play in the first game against Grangeville, had 12 points and 10 rebounds. Schmidt also hit double figures with 10 points. Forsmann scored 7 and Kyle Daly scored 4. Grangeville had the rebounding edge, 32-40. Sigler had 3 steals and 3 assists. Prairie was 21 for 54 from the field, 39%, and 5 for 10 at the line, 50%. Grangeville was 18 for 48 from the field, 37%, and 6 for 11 at the line, 54%. In the JV game Derek Schaeffer had a huge game with 23 points and 12 rebounds, but it wasn’t enough as Grangeville won 50-68. Schaeffer scored 9 points in the first quarter as he was 4 for 4 from the field but Grangeville pulled out to a 14-21 lead. The Bulldogs extended the lead to 26-38 by halftime. Prairie outscored the Bulldogs in the third quarter but only by 13-11. In addition to Schaeffer, Seth Guyer and Joe Schumacher scored 8 points each. Beau Schlader scored 4, Kyle Holthaus 3 and Conner Rieman and Ryan Dalgliesh 2 each. Prairie held a 31-25 rebounding edge. Rieman had 4 assists and 4 steals while Brock Heath had 4 assists. Prairie was 20 for 51 from the field, 39%, and 9 for 18 at the line, 50%. Grangeville was 28 for 57 from the field, 49%, and 9 for 18 at the line. Pirates comeback to beat Indians The Prairie Pirates trailed at Nezperce 28-35 at the half but rallied to win 71-66 Thursday, Jan. 24. Much of the game was made up of runs be each team as neither team ever really built a huge advantage. Nezperce led 11-13 at the end of the third quarter and extended the lead to 28-35 by halftime. Prairie came out strong in the third quarter and cut the advantage to 46-48 by the end of the third period. In the fourth Prairie opened with a 13-0 run fueled by 6 points from Kenneth Enneking, and were able to hold on for the 5 point win. Branden Waller filled the stat sheet as he had 25 points, 15 rebounds, 6 assists and 5 steals. David Sigler chipped in 19 points and 5 assists. Kyle Daly added 9 points, Enneking 6, Tyler Forsmann 4, Devin Schmidt and Kyle Holthaus 3 each and Eric Daly 2. With the win Prairie improves to 3-2 in league play and 9-6 overall. Windy conditions lead to lower scores Despite a very windy day, 50 members of the Cottonwood Gun Club turned out to shoot. High scores for the week were Mike Long, Scott James, Jean Poxleitner, and Paul Gilmore all with 23’s. Philip Poxleitner, Scott Jungert, Andy Terhaar, and Butch Spencer with 22’s. Top scores are as follows: AA Class- Mike Long- 23, Philip Poxleitner and Scott Jungert with 22’s; A Class- Scott James-23 and Andy Terhaar-22; B Class- Jean Poxleitner-23 and Butch Spencer-22; C Class- Paul Gilmore- 23, and Dale Hemerick-21; D Class- Robert Gilmore and Nate Gentry-19 and Susan Schaeffer-18. Top Lady shooter was Jean Poxleitner with a 23 and Judy Uhlorn with a 19. Top Junior shooter was Robert Gilmore, 19 and Derek Schaeffer, 18.
