Pirates win twice
The Prairie Pirates won a pair of league games this past week. On Thursday, Jan. 27, they rallied from a double-digit deficit to defeat Clearwater Valley 58-53 at Cottonwood. On Friday, Jan. 28, they shut down Potlatch 50-27, also at Cottonwood.
Vs. C.V.
The Pirates got off to a rocky start in the game as they fell behind 9-13 after one quarter and 23-34 at halftime.
Some of that may be in part due to not having point guard Kyle Schwartz who was out with a knee injury. Wyatt Ross had to take over point guard duties/
The Pirates made some adjustments at halftime and came out and outscored the Rams 18-9 in the third quarter to cut the lead to just 2 at 41-43.
They took the lead early in the fourth quarter and outscored the Rams 17-10 to pull out a 58-53 win.
Lee Forsmann led the team with 21 points and 12 rebounds. Zach Rambo added 20 points with Lane Schumacher scoring 11 and Wyatt Ross, Shane Hanson and Morgan Poxleitner had 2 points each.
Prairie’s C team lost a 2-quarter game to the Rams’ JV 12-20.

Vs. Potlatch
The first meeting at Potlatch was just a 4-point win over the Loggers. This time around it started out like it would be another close game then the Pirates clamped on defense and pulled away for a big win.Lee Forsmann looks determined as he appears to get fouled on a shot against Potlatch. The Pirates started out playing man defense full court and Potlatch was able to burn them for some transition baskets. The Loggers got on the board first with a 3-pointer but Rambo answered with a lay-up. Forsmann then scored to give Prairie their first lead.
Potlatch got one of their transition baskets then added a putback for a 4-7 lead. Forsmann scored inside to make it 6-7. The Loggers then scored 5 straight for a 6-12 lead. Coach Shawn Wolter then called timeout to switch up the defense.
Prairie ended the first quarter with an 8-0 run. Forsmann scored on a nice post move then added 2 free throws. He rebounded his own missed shot and put it in to tie the game at 12-12. Hanson then scored a lay-up to give Prairie a 14-12 lead at the end of the quarter.
Rambo sank a midrange jumper to open the second quarter and then scored on an inbounds feed from Ross to make it 18-12.
A Potlatch basket was answered by a 3-point play by Forsmann that made it 21-14 with 4:59 left in the half.
Neither team scored for the next 4 minutes with Potlatch breaking the dry spell with a pair of free throws. Forsmann then closed out the half with a lay-up to make it 23-16 at the break.
Prairie opened the second half with a 3-pointer each by Schumacher and Rambo to push their lead to 13 at 29-16.
The zone continued to stymie the Loggers who scored just 5 points in the quarter. After a 3 by Potlatch made it 31-21, the Pirates closed out the quarter with 8 straight points. Poxleitner scored a free throw. Rambo sank a 3, Forsmann made 2 free throws and Rambo drove for a lay-up to make it 39-21 after 3 quarters.
Prairie then scored the first 6 points of the fourth quarter to make it 14 straight points. Forsmann made a free throw, Schumacher made a 3 from the corner and then sank both ends of a 1 and 1 to make it 45-21 with 4:23 left to play.
Potlatch finally broke their drought with a 3 at the 3:30 mark. Rambo answered with a basket. After another Potlatch 3, Forsmann made a 3-pointer that wound up being the last points of the game even though there were 2 minutes left to play.
Forsmann scored 21 points and added 18 rebounds to lead the Pirates in both categories. Rambo scored 18 points. Schumacher scored 8, Hanson 2 and Poxleitner 1.
Prairie outrebounded the Loggers 40-20.
Forsmann and Ross each had a steal while Schumacher had 5 assists and Ross had 4.
Prairie was 15 for 43 from the field, 35%, and 9 for 11 at the line, 82%. Potlatch was 10 for 43 from the field, 23%, and 4 for 6 at the line, 67%. The Loggers made just 4 baskets in the second half and 3 of those were 3-pointers. They hit just 5 of 29 in the final 3 quarters against Prairie’s zone.
Prairie is now 13-3 on the season and 9-3 in league play.
Potlatch won the JV game 41-46.
Prairie scored the first 4 points of the game then Potlatch took over. Trenton Lorentz and Noah Behler each scored for a 4-0 Prairie lead but the Pirates managed just a free throw by Morgan Poxleitner the rest of the first quarter as Potlatch took a 5-11 lead.
Each team scored 9 points in the second quarter as Potlatch still ed by 6 at the half, 14-20. Prairie scored 7 of their 9 second quarter points at the free throw line as Matt Wemhoff had Prairie’s only baskets of the quarter.
Potlatch outscored Prairie 3-11 to open the second half and take a 17-31 lead. They eventually built a 24-42 lead with 2:08 left. At that point the Pirates started to rally.
Priarie scored the final 9 points of the third quarter to cut the deficit to 33-42. Prairie got a basket each by Behler and Briggs Rambo, a free throw by Wemhoff and a basket each by Behler and Weston Riener.
Prairie then scored the first 7 points of the fourth quarter to cut an 18 point deficit all the way down to 2 points. Behler scored a putback then Colton McElroy scored 2 baskets and a free throw to make it 40-42 with 1:36 to play.
Potlatch then broke a nearly 10 minute scoring drought by making 4 straight free throws. McElroy added a free throw in the final seconds to cut the final margin to 5.
Behler scored 12, Wemhoff 11, McElroy 6, Lorentz and Poxleitner 3 each and Riener, Dylan Uhlenkott and Rambo 2 each.
Wemhoff had 8 rebounds and Poxleitner 7 to lead Prairie to a 36-28 advantage on the boards.
McElroy had 4 steals while Poxleitner, Lorentz and Behler had 3 each. Behler had 2 assists.
The JVs were 14 for 47 from the field, 30%, and 12 for 28 at the line, 43%. Potlatch was 17 for 42 from the field, 40%, and 9 for 14 at the line, 64%.
The JV team also had a home game against Lewiston on Wednesday, Jan. 26, and lost 36-64.
