Pirates lose to KamiahPIRATES BOYS BASKETBALL SCHEDULE FOR 2021-22
The Prairie Pirates got off to a strong start then went ice-cold as they lost to Kamiah 38-48 Monday, Feb. 7 at Cottonwood.Lee Forsmann shoots for 3 against Kamiah. Also shown is Zach Rambo.
Zach Rambo started the scoring with a 3-pointer but Kamiah answered with a pair of baskets.
Rambo scored again and Lee Forsmann added a basket for a 7-4 lead. Rambo added 2 more baskets in the quarter as he went 4 for 4 and Forsmann added a putback as Prairie took a 13-9 lead.
Shane Hanson scored off a feed from Wyatt Ross to close out the quarter with Prairie up 15-9 after hitting 7 of 9 shots from the field.
Forsmann scored a putback to open the second quarter and give Prairie a 17-9 lead.
After that the offense dried up for the Pirates as they made just 2 of 12 shots in the quarter.
Kamiah’s Luke Krogh sank a pair of 3’s and Kamiah freshman David Kludt scored to tie the game.
Rambo hit a 3 with 1:51 left to give Prairie back the lead but a 3 by Everett Skinner and a basket by Krogh gave Kamiah a 20-22 halftime lead.
In the third quarter, Rambo, who was 5 for 5 in the first half, missed his first 4 shots and hit just 1 of 8 in the third quarter. As a team Prairie was 2 for 11 in the quarter as Kamiah outscored them 4-12 to take a 24-34 lead into the fourth period.
Kamiah led by as many as 14 in the fourth quarter at 29-43. Prairie then started to rally back with a 9-3 run that got the lead down to 6 t 38-44. Rambo made a free throw after a technical foul for taunting on Kamiah and then added a basket. Lane Schumacher and Rambo each hit a 3-pointer to pull the Pirates within 6 with 53 seconds left.
That was it though as Kamiah scored the final 4 points of the game at the free throw line.
Rambo wound up with 20 points to lead the Pirates while Forsmann scored 10 with 13 rebounds. Schumacher scored 4 and Ross and Hanson added 2 each.
Kamiah had a 25-31 edge on the boards.
Schumacher had 3 steals and Ross had 3 assists.
Prairie was 15 for 45 from the field, 33%, and 4 for 8 at the line, 50%. Kamiah was16 for 37 from the field, 43%, and 9 for 17 at the line, 53%.
Prairie is now 13-4 on the season and 9-4 in league play with 1 league game left to play at Logos on Friday.
With the win, Kamiah clinched the #2 seed into District. Prairie has the tiebreaker against Logos, so win or lose on Friday, Prairie will be the #3 seed and Logos #4.
In the JV game Prairie trailed most of the way but pulled out a 33-32 win at the buzzer.
It was a low scoring first quarter with Prairie leading just 4-3 at the end of the period. Matt Wemhoff and Morgan Poxleitner had Prairie’s 2 baskets.
In the second quarter Trenton Lorentz scored a putback and Colton McElroy scored after a steal for an 8-3 lead with 4:37 left in the half.
Kamiah then took over and scored 8 straight points to take an 8-11 lead at the break.
Prairie tied the scored twice in the third quarter. They tied it at 12-12 on a basket by Noah Behler and again at 14-14 on 2 free throws by Poxleitner.
After a 3 by Kamiah, Poxleitner and Benny Elven each scored to give Prairie an 18-17 lead with 2:08 left in the period. Kamiah then scored 7 straight to take an 18-24 lead into the fourth quarter.
McElroy scored after grabbing a long rebound and Elven scored inside to cut the deficit to 2 at 22-24.
Kamiah scored twice to lead 22-28 but a basket by Behler, a free throw by Lorentz and a drive for a lay-up by Weston Riener cut the lead to 1 at 27-28 with 3:52 left.
Kamiah outscored Prairie 4-2 to lead 29-32 with 33 seconds left.
Wemhoff scored on a drive with 21 seconds left and Prairie then quickly fouled.
Kamiah missed the 1 and 1 attempt with McElroy grabbing the rebound.
After a missed shot went out of bounds under the basket with 3 second left, Prairie set up an inbounds play where Wemhoff got the ball in to Behler for a lay-up just before the buzzer sounded giving Prairie a 1-point, 33-32 win.
Poxleitner led the JV’s in scoring with 8 points. Wemhoff and Behler scored 6 each. McElroy and Elven scored 4 each. Lorentz scored 3 and Riener scored 2.
Rebounding was even up at 44-44. Wemhoff had 10 to lead the Pirates with Behler adding 9 rebounds and Lorentz 8.
Wemhoff had 5 steals while McElroy had 4. McElroy had 4 assists.
The JV’s were 15 for 53 from the field, 28%, and 3 for 8 at the line, 38%. Kamiah was 13 for 55 from the field, 24%, and 3 for 10 at the line, 30%.
