ends Prairie's season
The Prairie Piratesí basketball season came to an abrupt end Tuesday, Feb. 19 when Clearwater Valley edged them 45-46 in loser out play at the District Tournament at the LCSC Activity Center.
A rough third quarter forced Prairie to come from behind and they had their chances in the final seconds.
Prairie led 14-13 after one quarter thanks to 8 first quarter points from Marcus Higgins who extended his hot shooting from the night before with a pair of 3-pointers. Once the quarter ended though his shooting touch disappeared.
C.V. started the second quarter with a 0-7 run to take a 14-20 lead but Prairie then rallied back to take the lead at the half.
They shut out C.V. over the final 5 minutes of the half and Tanner Ross came off the bench to score the last 6 points of the half and give Prairie a 21-20 lead at the break. Ross did not play at all in the second half.
Prairie opened the third quarter with Tyler Hankerson hitting 5 of 6 free throws that had Prairie up 26-24. C.V. then had a 0-8 run to take the lead and wound up the quarter with a 32-27 lead.
They extended the lead to 34-41 with 5:38 left in the game before Prairie started to rally back.
A Lucas Arnzen free throw and a Rhett Schlader bank shot cut the lead to 4. Prairie then got a turnover on an offensive foul by C.V. and that led to a basket by Arnzen that cut the lead to 39-41.
C.V. answered with a basket but Hankerson hit a 3 to cut the lead to 42-43 with 1:18 to play.
With 1:03 left C.V.ís Brandon Owens made the first and missed the second of a 1 and 1 free throw situation. Prairie got the rebound and Hankerson was fouled on a putback attempt. He made the second of his 2 free throws to cut the lead to 1.
Austin Reed was then fouled and also made the first and missed the second of 2 free throws to make it a 2-point game.
Prairie came down on offense and Higgins tried a 3 that missed, Arnzenís tip missed and finally Seth Chaffee scored the putback to tie the game with just 8 seconds left. He was fouled but missed the free throw and Reed rebounded. C.V. was looking to rush the ball upcourt for a final shot but Reed was fouled by Chaffee in the backcourt. Reed made the first free throw of a double bonus situation to put C.V. ahead but missed the second. Arnzen rebounded and Prairie got a timeout with just over 3 seconds left.
Jake Bruner, who sat out the game with a collarbone injury but was in uniform, was put in to throw the long inbounds pass. He got the ball to Arnzen who tossed it to Schlader who was on the right wing. Schladerís midcourt desperation shot appeared online but did not go in as the buzzer sounded.
Hankerson wound up with 14 points to lead Prairie in scoring. Higgins scored 9 while Schlader and Arnzen scored 7 each. Ross scored 6 and Chaffee scored 2.
