Pirates swept by Genesee
The Prairie baseball team played a pair of doubleheaders in the past week. On Saturday, April 23, they split a doubleheader against Troy in what turned out to be their first home games of the season, 4-5 and 7-0. On Monday, April 25, also at Cottonwood, they swept the Nighthawks 28-3 and 25-5 allowing just 1 hit each game.
Game 1 vs Troy
In the opening game against Troy the Pirates took an early lead only to see the Trojans rally late.
Prairie scored 2 runs in the top of the first and 1 in the third for a 3-0 lead.
Troy came back with 2 in the bottom of the third and tied it with a run in the bottom of the fifth.
Prairie took back the lead with a run in the top of the sixth but Troy responded with 2 in the bottom of the inning to take a 4-5 lead.
Prairie was unable to score in the seventh as Troy held on to win.
Prairie had 6 hits in the game, 2 each by 3 different players. Reece Shears had a single and a homer. Chase Kaschmitter and Colton McElroy each had a single and a double.
Chase Kaschmitter started on the mound and pitched into the sixth inning with Noah Behler coming on in the sixth inning and giving up the winning run.

Game 2 vs. Troy
Behler started the second game and pitched 6 shutout innings before running out of pitches. Alex McElroy came on in the seventh to finish the combined 1-hitter.
Prairie scored 5 runs in the bottom of the first and added 2 more in the fifth.
The Pirates had 9 hits, all singles. Shears had 2 singles while Cody Kaschmitter, Chase Kaschmitter, Eli Hinds, Colton McElroy, Carter Shears, Dylan Uhlenkott and Trenton Lorentz each had 1 single.

Game 1 vs. Nezperce
The opening game with Nezperce was stopped after 3 innings on the 15-run mercy rule as the Pirates scored 28 runs on 16 hits with 13 walks and 2 hit batters plus 3 Nezperce errors contributing to the scoring.
Prairie scored 4 runs in the top of the first as the first 4 hitters all collected hits, 3 of them doubles. Reece Shears led off the game with a double to right. Cody Kaschmitter followed with a double as Shears scored. Chase Kaschmitter singled to right to score Cody and Colton McElroy doubled to right center to score Chase.
After an out, 2 walks loaded the bases and after a second out, Lorentz drew a walk to score McElroy for a 4-0 lead.
Alex McElroy pitched for the Pirates and allowed a run without benefit of a hit. A walk, 2 hit batsmen and an error led to the Nezperce run.
Prairie scored 14 runs in the top of the second. Cody Kaschmitter led off with a double to center. Chase Kaschmitter followed with a triple to the gap in left that scored Cody. Colton McElroy beat out an infield hit as Chase scored. Eli Hinds reached on an error and Noah Behler walked to load the bases. Carter Shears drew a walk to scored McElroy. Alex McElroy hit a grounder to third with Hinds scoring ahead of the throw home. After an out Reece Shears hit a 3-run triple to left. Cody Kaschmitter doubled to score Reece and Chase Kaschmitter doubled to right to score Cody. Colton McElroy walked and Hinds singled to left to score Chase. Colton McElroy scored on a sacrifice fly by Behler. Carter Shears singled to right and Alex McElroy reached on an infield hit as Hinds scored. Lorentz then hit a triple to left center to score both Carter Shears and Alex McElroy and make it 18-1.
Nezperce got a walk and a single to start the second inning. A pair of wild pitches allowed a run to score and after an out, a sacrifice fly to left scored another run. 2 walks loaded the bases before Alex McElroy got out of the inning on a forceout at third.
Nezperce changed pitchers for the third inning and the new pitcher struggled to throw strikes. 7 walks, 2 hit batters, 2 errors and a single each by Chase Kaschmitter and Collin Ray led to the 10 runs and a 28-3 lead.
Reece Shears pitched the bottom of the third and after walking the first two batters, struck out the next 3 to end the game.
Chase Kaschmitter had a triple, a double and 2 singles in the game with 3 RBI. Cody Kaschmitter had 3 doubles and 2 RBI. Reece Shears had a triple and a double and 3 RBI. Colton McElroy had a single and a double and 2 RBI. Lorentz had a triple and 4 RBI. Carter Shears and Alex McElroy each had a single and 3 RBI. Ray had a single and an RBI. Behler had an RBI.
McElroy allowed 1 hit and 3 runs in 2 innings with 5 walks, 2 hit batsmen and no strikeouts. Shears gave up no hit and no runs in 1 inning with 2 walks and 3 strikeouts.

Game 2 vs. Nezperce
The second game was more of the same although Nezperce did hold a lead for an inning and a half.
Nezperce scored 2 against Colton McElroy in the first inning and Prairie scored 1 in the bottom of the inning.
Nezperce did not score in the second and Prairie erupted for 24 runs, the most runs we can remember the Pirates ever scoring in a single inning.
Nezperce scored 3 in the top of the third and then the game was called on the 3-inning, 15-run mercy rule.
The Pirates had 15 hits in the game. Chase Kaschmitter had a homer, a double and a single. He hit for the cycle over the 5 innings of the doubleheader. Cody Kaschmitter and Reece Shears each had a double and a single. Lorentz, Colton McElroy and Uhlenkott each had 2 singles. Behler had a double and Kaden Duclos had a single.
Colton McElroy pitched all 3 innings allowing just 1 hit and 5 runs.
The Pirates are now 7-7 overall and 5-4 in league play.
