Lewis SCD holds field trip at Winchester Lake
The Lewis Soil Conservation District hosted its 53rd Annual Sixth Grade Field Day at Winchester Lake State Park on Wednesday, May 13. Despite cold temperatures, wind, and rain, participants made the most of the day.
The event welcomed 110 students from the Nezperce, Kamiah, Highland, St. John Bosco, and Prairie school districts.
Throughout the day, students rotated through eight 20-minute educational stations. These included Soils and Geology, led by Eileen Rowan of the Idaho Soil and Water Conservation Commission; Take Me Fishing, hosted by Jennifer Bruns and Zoe Doerr of the Idaho Department of Fish and Game, with assistance from Amelia Patten of the Natural Resources Conservation Service and Shelly Lucier of the Lewis County University of Idaho Extension Office; Fire Control, instructed by Jack Crull and Reid Newbre of the Idaho Department of Lands; Forestry, presented by Chris Gerhart, Dave Luther, Scott Sievers, and Anthan Larson of the Idaho Department of Lands; Air Quality, led by Johna Boulafentis of the Nez Perce Tribe Air Quality Program; Fish Science, taught by Corie Samson and Laura Sprague of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service at Dworshak Fish Hatchery; a Nature Trail hike led by LSCD Board Supervisor Tyler Nelson; and Canoeing, hosted by Alex Arnold, Tia Schumacher, Neosha Hubbs, and Breanna Wright of the Natural Resources Conservation Service. Jennifer Bernica of the Farm Service Agency assisted with setup, timekeeping, lunch preparation, and takedown.
Leann Trautman and Michael Dill of the Winchester Quick Response Unit were also on hand to help ensure everyone’s safety. LSCD thanks the students, teachers, volunteers, instructors, and Winchester Lake State Park staff for helping make the event another success.
