Firewood permits available online
Permits to cut and collect personal use firewood in northern Idaho are now available for purchase online through the Bureau of Land Management’s (BLM) Forest Product Permit System. Permits are valid for woodcutting lands managed by the Coeur d’Alene and Cottonwood Field Offices. They are not valid for firewood cutting activities on lands managed by the U.S. Forest Service.
Personal use firewood permits cost $5 per cord with a two-cord minimum purchase per transaction. Purchases through the online program can be made 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
“We are pleased to offer this convenient method of purchasing a fuelwood permit for the public,” said Ray Pease, Field Manager for the Coeur d’Alene Field Office. “Instead of having to travel to a local BLM office during business hours, members of the public can purchase a permit on their own time schedule from just about anywhere.”
To purchase a permit online:
1. Go to https://forestproducts.blm.gov
2. Click on Idaho, select either the Coeur d’Alene or Cottonwood Field Office, and then select Fuelwood.
3. Complete and submit the application.
4. Enter credit/debit card information. The payment will be processed within minutes, and a permit can be printed or saved on a mobile device.
The purchaser will receive an email with all the maps, permit stipulations, load tags (to be applied to firewood loads being removed), and documentation needed in order to cut and remove products from BLM-managed lands safely. Permits are non-refundable, are not authorized for use on U.S. Forest Service lands and may not be transferred to another party.
Firewood cutters are required to comply with all permit terms and conditions. This includes conformance with industrial fire precaution level restrictions in effect during periods of elevated wildfire danger. Each permit must be validated and attached to the load in a visible location before any cut wood is transported.
Firewood cutting permits are still available for in-person purchases for those that do not have access to a computer or mobile device. For additional information and office hours, contact the Coeur d’Alene Field Office at 208-769-5000 or the Cottonwood Field Office at 208-962-3245.
