May
The School board at their April 23 meeting approved a special meeting April 29 to discuss the 2003-04 budget.
The Elementary School has received an award as an A+ Excellence in Education awarded by the Idaho Education Association.
The Prairie baseball team had a 18-3 win against Lapwai in play Friday, April 25, at Lapwai.
School District seeks $263,000 in override levy.
Prairie Middle School students for the month of April are Kelly Edwards and Carolyn Sonnen.
Valedictorians for 2003 are: Katie Holthaus, Sharon Lustig and Kerry Uhlorn and the Salutatorians are: Mary Sonnen, Lacie Westbrook, Leah Rehder and Jeff Clark.
Students for the month of March at the High School are Jeff Clark and Tara Wimer.
Kristine Uhlenkott served as a legislative page in Boise for the Health & Welfare Committee.
The City Council decided against sponsoring a library in Cottonwood at their May meeting.
Prairie High School students of the month for May are: Kerry Uhlenkott and Maureen Tacke.
Carol Lauer was presented with a plaque for her 30 years of service to the school district.
On Monday, May 26, the Veterans Memorial was dedicated. This was a project of the Cottonwood Lion’s Club membership.
The school district override levy passed 398 to 270 in the May 20 election.

Albert C. Pratt, 91, died April 29 in Lewiston. Albert was born Aug. 1, 1911 in Grangeville.
Joan Geis, 68, died May 1. She was born Oct. 25, 1934 in Greencreek. She delivered The Tribune for many years and then worked at St. Mary’s Hospital until retirement.
Lawrence J. Bruegeman, 64, died May 4 at St. Mary’s Hospital. He was born Sept. 12, 1938.
Tony J. Arnzen, 87, died May 9 at St. Mary’s Hospital. He was born Aug. 4, 1915 at Ferdinand.

Rushelle Marie Morley and Jacob Clarence Forsmann to wed June 28 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church.

June
Middle School Students of the Month for May are Elena Hawkins and Anthony Duman.
Buzz and Evelyn Kopczynski were chosen as 2003 Buggy Whip Marshall’s by the committee.
June 19 the power went out in Cottonwood and surrounding area at about midnight Thursday and did not return until about 8 p.m. Friday evening. The large transformer west of Cottonwood went out. A temporary transformer was brought from Spokane and hooked into the line.

Theodore E. “Ted” Wherry, 91, died May 29th at Grangeville. He was born Jan. 7, 1912 at Letts, Iowa.
Louise K. Ackerman, 71, died May 26th in Lewiston. She was born March 20, 1952, to John and Bertha Bensching Mager at Keuterville.
William McCarthy, 82, died June 8th in Lewiston. He was born Feb. 2, 1921 in Boonton, N.J.
Jeanne C. Holthaus, 63, died June 16th in Spokane. She was born April 15, 1940 to Frank B. and Gertrude C. Sprute Forsmann at Ferdinand.
Pauline F. Uhlenkott, 86, died June 8th in Lewiston. She was born Sept. 13, 1916 to Henry and Catherine Sprute.
Mary Connealy, 88, died May 19th at Las Vegas. She was born Nov. 14, 1914 in Cottonwood to Mathias and Mary Aichlmeyer Seubert.
George W. Kaschmitter, Jr., 84, died June 20th in Lewiston. He was born Oct. 28, 1918 to Raymond and Mary Kolbeck Kaschmitter in Stacy, Montana.

Mark and Rita Forsmann celebrate their 60th Wedding Anniversary June 30th at Assumption Catholic Church in Ferdinand.
July
The annual celebration at Greencreek is Friday, July 4th with Larry Stubbers as Marshal.
Cottonwood sees busy time as state resurfaces by-pass highway and city starts to drill under highway to put in water pipe for new well.
The 23rd Buggy Whip is set to get underway July 18-20 as the events move back to Main Street after three years in the City Park.
The China Café opened as a new business in Cottonwood in the upper floor of the Royale Building on Main Street.
The Raspberry Festival is Sunday, Aug. 3rd, at St. Gertrude’s Monastery to benefit the museum. This year a breakfast was added to the day’s events.

Gladys Marian Richards Parks Best, 76, died June 21st. She was born July 21, 1926 in Belden, Cal.
Marcella Rustemeyer Nau, 87, died July 2 at Lewiston. She was born Dec. 10, 1915, in Cottonwood to George and Mary Rustemeyer.
Frank B. Forsman, 85, died June 24th at Portland, Ore. He was born July 1, 1917 in Keuterville.
Judy D. (Bray) Behler, 46, died July 12 at Lewiston. She was born Aug. 2, 1956 to Clarence and Virginia Bray in Pocatello.
John Daniel Marek, 28, died July 5th, from injuries at Grangeville. He was born March 15, 1975 to Jack and Peggy Johnson Marek at Cottonwood.
Henry L. “Hank” Spengler, 92, died July 20th at Cottonwood. He was born Sept. 5, 1910 to Charles and Anna Spengler at Denver, Idaho.
Marie Schnider Jones, 71, died July 7th in Portland, Ore. following surgery. She was born Sept. 25, 1931 to Bernard and Jane Nuxoll of Greencreek.
June L. Beckman, 76, died July 18th.
Jake Kopczynski, 87, died July 28th at Lewiston. He was born Sept. 15, 1915 at Cottonwood and he was a longtime Cottonwood businessman.

Three trying for 2004 Fair Queen are Brittny Behler, Bridget Long and Lacy Seubert all of Cottonwood.
The Historical Museum of St. Gertrude received a donation of a bronze sculpture of Chief Joseph and an Indian Saddle. Donations were made by David Reed, son of Mary Reed.
The quilt show at the Raspberry Festival saw Shannon Clapperton of Kamiah receive first in Viewers Choice, Joyce Anderson of Kamiah was first in wall hangers in Viewers Choice and Shirley Baerlocher of Cottonwood was first in Quilters Choice.
Glenn and Verla Simlers were the 2003 grand marshal’s for the Idaho County Fair.
The August 21 issue announced that the new lights are in at the new football field.
NICI hosted a barbecue to introduce Lynn Guyer, the new Warden.
Katy Fox was named the grand champion fitting and showing Round Robin Winner at the Idaho County Fair this year with Julie Muench as reserve champion.

Francis J. Mager, 83, died Aug. 10th at the VA Nursing Home in Boise.
Stan Kopczynski, 93, died Aug. 21st at Grangeville. Stan was born June 28, 1910 in Comox, Columbia, Canada. He was a longtime businessman in Cottonwood as a partner in City Electric.
Christopher M. Wemhoff, 19, died Aug. 16th after an auto accident in Seattle. He was born Aug. 30, 1983 in Kennewick, Wash.

Branden Daniel Johnson was born July 20th in Coeur d’Alene to Carrie and Cliff Johnson.
