Girls District starts Feb. 4
The girls’ district basketball tournament gets underway next Wednesday, Feb. 4 with 2 games with the other two opening round games set for Thursday, Feb. 5.
Team 6 plays Team 3 at 6 p.m. Feb. 4 followed by Team 7 vs. Team 2. Team 4 plays Team 5 on Thursday night at 6 p.m. with Team 1 vs. Team 8 at 7:30 p.m.
Currently Prairie is in fourth place in league with 1 league game left. Kamiah and Potlatch have a chance to tie them for fourth which means Prairie could be the 4th, 6th or 7th seed. Wallace will probably be inserted as the #5 seed.
The tournament will continue on Saturday, Feb. 7 with 4 games, 2 loser-out games starting at 1 p.m. followed by two winners bracket games starting at 6 p.m.
Monday, Feb. 9 will be a pair of losers bracket games. Thursday, Feb. 12 will feature a loser’s bracket game at 6 followed by the championship game. The 6 p.m. winner will face the championship game loser on Saturday, Feb. 14 for second place and a spot in the state tournament.


Lady Pirates beat Orofino
The Prairie Lady Pirates showed patience on offense and steadily built their lead throughout the game as they defeated Orofino 52-39 at Cottonwood Tuesday, January 20.
Prairie had a slim 9-8 lead at the end of the first quarter and stretched it to 21-17 by halftime.
The third quarter is where they pulled away as they outscored Orofino 16-9 to take a 37-26 lead into the fourth.
Briget Long led the way in scoring with 14 points. Bridget Enneking and Karel Wassmuth each scored 8 points with Lacey Wargi scoring 6, Ashley Jackson and Lauren Merrill 3 each, Kayla Holthaus, Natalie Arnzen, Ashley Schultz and Maureen Tacke 2 each and Vanessa Sonnen and Ingrid Dahlen 1 each.
Kayla Holthaus picked up 8 assists in the game.
The JV team also won, 38-18.

Lady Pirates lose at Lapwai
Lapwai’s swarming, trapping zone pressure got to the Prairie Lady Pirates as they lost 28-48 at Lapwai Thursday, January 22.
Lapwai jumped out on top 6-14 by the end of the first quarter and 14-25 by halftime.
Prairie was held to 8 points or less in each quarter as they struggled to get into their offense against Lapwai.
Natalie Arnzen topped the scoring for the Pirates with 12 points with Bridget Enneking scoring 9, Briget Long 6 and Ashley Jackson 1.
The loss drops Prairie to 8-9 on the season and 4-7 in league play.
Prairie also lost the JV game, 30-43.

Lady Pirates lose at Genesee
The Prairie Lady Pirates traveled to Genesee Monday, January 26, and came away with a 23-34 loss.Briget Long tries to get a shot up past a Genesee block. Lacey Wargi is at right.
The game was close until the final 4 minutes when Genesee turned several Prairie turnovers into transition baskets.
For most of the game Prairie played things close by being patient on offense and playing solid defense.
Genesee took the early advantage by jumping out to a 0-5 lead but a putback by Natalie Arnzen and 2 free throws by Vanessa Sonnen pulled the Pirates back within 1.
After Genesee pulled to a 6-10 lead, Prairie came back to tie the score on a pair of free throws by Lacey Wargi and a basket on an inbounds play by Arnzen.
Prairie then took their first lead to open the second quarter when Wargi hit from the baseline to make it 12-10. 
Genesee’s Jena Udy put the Bulldogs on top with a 3-pointer but Prairie came back with a free throw by Bridget Enneking and another baseline shot by Wargi for a 15-13 lead with 2:15 left in the half.
Genesee took the halftime lead though with 3 straight points.
Enneking scored a putback to open the third quarter scoring and give Prairie the lead but Genesee then scored 5 straight points to take the lead for good.
Enneking added a free throw in the final minute of the quarter to cut the lead back to 3 at 18-21.
Genesee opened the fourth quarter scoring with a basket but a pass out of the high post by Arnzen down to Briget Long for a lay-up cut the lead back to 3. After another 3-pointer by Udy, Arnzen passed down to Long for another lay-up.
But then Arnzen, who’d battled foul trouble since early in the second quarter, picked up her fifth foul and Genesee started forcing turnovers. 
The Bulldogs scored 8 straight points before Long connected on a free throw with 19 seconds left.
Wargi wound up the leading scorer with 6 points with Long scoring 5, Arnzen and Enneking 4 each and Karel Wassmuth and Sonnen 2 each.
Prairie had a 35-28 rebounding advantage with Enneking grabbing 9 rebounds while Arnzen and Wargi had 7 each.

Prairie connected on 8 of 33 shots, 24%, and 7 of 13 free throws while Genesee was 11 for 43 from the field, 26%, and 9 for 20 at the line.
The loss drops Prairie to 8-10 on the season.
The JV team also lost to Genesee as the Bulldogs broke open a close game in the second half.
Poor free throw shooting hurt Prairie as they were just 7 for 32 at the line in the game, squandering numerous chances to keep it close.
Prairie trailed just 4-5 after a low-scoring first quarter.
Genesee then scored 8 straight to open the second quarter but Prairie answered with their own 7-0 run and trailed by only 3 at the half, 14-17.
Tabitha Sonnen opened the second half scoring with a basket to cut the lead to 1 and after a Genesee basket, Meghan VanderPas scored a lay-up after a steal and Ashley Schaeffer hit a free throw to tie the game at 19.
Genesee then took over the game, forcing turnovers with their press, and ran off 8 straight points and led 22-31 heading into the fourth quarter.
Runs of 9 straight and 7 straight points in the fourth quarter killed any chance the Pirates had.
Sonnen wound up leading the JV’s in scoring with 13 points, hitting 4 of 6 second half shots and 6 of 13 in the game. VanderPas added 10 points with Myken Dahlen scoring 4, Randi Schumacher 3, Schaeffer 2 and Sarah Forsmann 1.
Rebounding was even at 42 each with Schaeffer collecting 10 rebounds while Sonnen had 9 and Schumacher 7.
Ashley Jackson had 5 steals.
Prairie was 10 for 46 from the field and 7 for 32 at the line while Genesee was 19 for 52 from the field and 12 for 24 at the line.
