Pirates lose at Grangeville
Free passes and errors led to the Prairie baseball team’s first loss of the year as they fell 4-10 at Grangeville Tuesday, April 13.Brent Frei watches the flight of the ball as he heads toward first after hitting an RBI double.
The Pirates’ ace pitcher, Matt Baerlocher, was definitely not at his best as he had trouble locating the strike zone. He allowed just 2 hits in 3 2/3 innings but walked 10 and hit another batter. It didn’t help that there were 3 errors behind him in the field, all three coming in Grangeville’s 6-run fourth inning. Matt Forsmann came in to finish the game, ending the fourth on a lineout back to the mound. He allowed just 1 hit but 2 walks and another error led to 2 more Grangeville runs.
Prairie meanwhile could hit the ball but couldn’t seem to get the clutch hit when they needed it.
Prairie scored the game’s first run when Tyler Crane led off the second with a single and Brent Frei crushed a double to center to score him.
In the third Prairie had runners on first and second with nobody out but couldn’t score. They also left 2 runners on in the fourth.
Chad Arnzen backs out of the way of an inside pitch.Prairie rallied for 3 runs in the fifth as Jacob Riener led off with a single and Baerlocher followed by tomahawking a high pitch to left for a ground rule double. Both runners scored on Crane’s single to right. After Chad Arnzen walked, Frei picked up his second RBI with a single to right that scored Crane. That cut the lead to 4-8.
In the top of the seventh, Forsmann led off with a single to left but was stranded at second as the game ended.
Prairie outhit the Bulldogs 8-3 but Grangeville had the edge in baserunners.
Baerlocher had 6 strikeouts and Forsmann had 1.
Prairie hitters struck out 13 times against Grangeville’s Jacob Johnson.
Collecting hits for Prairie were Frei with a double and single, Crane and Riener with 2 singles each, Baerlocher with a double and Forsmann with a single.
The loss drops Prairie to 6-1 overall and 2-1 in league play.
