Lady Pirates lose in 7th to Orofino
It appeared the Prairie Lady Pirates was going to win 1-0 over Orofino but a 2-run error in the top of the seventh gave them a 1-2 loss Thursday, April 29 at Cottonwood.Ashley Schaeffer hits the ball against Orofino.
Until that one lapse in the seventh it was an extremely well-pitched, well-played game on both sides.
Prairie struck first in the bottom of the third as their first baserunner came around to score. Natalie Arnzen led off and worked the count to 3-2, fouling off 4 pitches in the process before being hit with the ninth pitch of the at-bat. After a pop-out to short, Lindsey Crea sacrificed Arnzen to second. Arnzen moved to third when Lacey Wargi beat the throw for an infield single. Prairie then pulled off a delayed double steal as Arnzen scored after Orofino attempted to catch Wargi at second.
Prairie almost had a second run in the inning as Ashley Schaeffer singled but Wargi tripped after rounding third and couldn’t get back to the bag. It would have been a close play at the plate if she hadn’t fallen.
Meanwhile Kayla Holthaus did a great job of working out of trouble throughout the game as she stranded 7 runners in the first 6 innings with two inning-ending double plays helping. The second inning ended when the hitter lined out to Meghan VanderPas at second with  runners on first and third and VanderPas threw to first for the double play. The third inning also ended on a double play. With a runner on third the hitter grounded to Schaeffer at third. Schaeffer threw to Heather Schierman at first for the out and Schierman threw home to catch the runner at the plate.
In the seventh Orofino got a 1-out infield single and she advanced to second as Wargi threw out the next hitter at first. A fielder’s choice followed with Wargi going after the runner at second instead of trying for the out at first. The next hitter grounded back to the pitcher but Holthaus’ throw went wide of Schierman at first and both baserunners wound up scoring.
Prairie had a chance in the bottom of the inning as they loaded the bases on a single by Holthaus, who was sacrificed to second by Karel Wassmuth, a walk by VanderPas and Maureen Tacke was hit with a 2-strike pitch. Arnzen then had another great at-bat, fouling off 4 2-strike pitches before smashing a liner. Unfortunately it went right to the shortstop who through to second to double off Ashley Jackson who was running for VanderPas, for the game-ending out.
Prairie had 3 hits in the game, all singles with 1 each by Wargi, Schaeffer and Holthaus.
Holthaus allowed 6 hits while walking 2, hitting 2 and striking out 7.
Orofino 0 0 0 0 0 0 2—2 6 0
