27 out for girls basketball
There are 27 girls turned out for the Prairie Lady Pirates basketball team this year with several returning starters on the varsity squad.Ashley Jackson plays defense during the Jamboree at C.V.
Senior Briget Long and juniors Bridget Enneking, Brittny Behler and Natalie Arnzen all saw a lot of time in the starting lineup on last year’s team while seniors Lauren Merrill and Vanessa Sonnen saw a lot of action and junior Ashley Jackson got a lot of time on the floor with the varsity at tournament time.
Coach Dave Snodgrass says the returning post players: Long, Behler, Arnzen and Enneking should be very solid and he likes the aggressiveness shown in practice by guards Sonnen and Merrill.
Also seeing some varsity time this year will be sophomores Meghan VanderPas and Tabitha Sonnen.
Filling out the varsity are senior Jenna Nida, a threat from the outside, and junior Ashley Schultz, the team’s tallest player at 6’0”.
Snodgrass said his biggest concerns will be foul trouble, shooting and turnovers. The foul trouble is a by-product of the aggressiveness his players are showing. He said Merrill, Jackson and Vanessa Sonnen should be able to put a lot of pressure on opposing guards. VanderPas and Tabitha Sonnen, who will spend time on both the JV and varsity, will also help with the pressure defense.
One player Snodgrass was really excited about is freshman Tiffany Schaeffer. He said it may be tough keeping her off the varsity as she could turn out to be the best guard on the entire roster.
Snodgrass sees Prairie and Culdesac battling for first in the south pod of the White Pine League with Lapwai, Genesee, Kendrick and possibly Troy all being very tough in the north pod.
Three teams will advance to state from the White Pine League this year.
Players listed on the JV roster are VanderPas, Tabitha Sonnen, Schaeffer, Sarah Arnzen, Carolyn Sonnen, Nicole Nida, Myken Dahlen, Schultz, Randi Schumacher, Kylie Uhlorn and Becky Gehring. They’ll be coached by Cindy Higgins again this year.
C team players are Sarah Arnzen, Gina Holthaus, Shayla Dalgliesh, Alli Holthaus, Mandy Geis, Brooke Holthaus, Kim Schaeffer, Chantel Boniecki and Christa Wilson. They are coached again this year by Mike VanderPas.
Snodgrass said it’ll be hard to find games for the C team this year and against some of their opponents this year the C team may get the nod for JV action.  Currently they have 9 “C” games scheduled and are working on scheduling some more games.
The varsity gets into action this Friday at Kamiah and Friday and Saturday they’ll be at C.V. for a tournament.
