Lady Pirates win big at Kamiah
The Prairie Lady Pirates raced out to an 11-0 lead in the first quarter and were never threatened as they won 63-28 at Kamiah in their season opener Thursday, Nov. 18.

Kamiah was held scoreless until 5 seconds left in the first quarter. Ashley Jackson then scored at the buzzer to make it 13-2 after one quarter.
Briget Long and Natalie Arnzen were the big scorers in the second quarter with 7 and 6 points respectively as Prairie built their lead to 35-14 at the half. Prairie twice had runs of 7 straight points in the quarter.
With the help of three 3-pointers, Kamiah was able to play even in the third quarter and scored the first point in the fourth to cut the lead to 45-26 but Prairie then went on an 18-0 scoring run to build a 37 point lead at 63-26. Kamiah scored a pair of free throws for the game’s final points.
Prairie had 3 players score in double figures and all but one player scored in the game. Enneking and Brittny Behler led the scoring with 13 points each while Long had a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Sonnen added 7 points including a 5 for 6 performance at the free throw line and added 10 rebounds. Arnzen led in rebound with 12 and scored 6. Jackson also scored 6 with Nicole Nida scoring 3 on a 3-pointer; Meghan VanderPas and Tabitha Sonnen 2 each and Ashley Schultz scored 1.

Vanessa Sonnen had 5 steals and 2 assists while Lauren Merrill had 3 assists. Enneking added 3 steals.
Prairie connected on 22 of 58 shots, 38%, and 16 of 29 free throws, 55%. Kamiah was just 7 of 40 from the field, 17%, and 10 of 22 at the line, 45%.
Prairie also won the JV game handily at 42-27.
They jumped out to a 12-2 lead by the end of the first quarter and led 17-8 at the half. 
Kamiah scored first in the third quarter then Prairie went on a 16-2 run the rest of the quarter to pull away to a 33-12 lead.
Prairie led 40-14 at one point in the fourth quarter then Kamiah started bombing 3’s and closed with a 2-13 run.
Nicole Nida led the JV squad in scoring with 11 points with Becky Gehring just missing a double-double with 10 points and 9 rebounds.
Carolyn Sonnen scored 5, Tiffany Schaeffer, Randi Schumacher and Sarah Arnzen 4 each, Tabitha Sonnen 2, and Kylie Uhlorn and Myken Dahlen 1 each.
Schumacher matched Gehring with 9 rebounds to lead the team with Carolyn Sonnen adding 8 boards and Schaeffer 7. Prairie held a 50-40 edge on the boards.
Nida had 9 steals in the game and 3 assists while Dahlen had 3 steals and 3 assists. Gehring had 3 steals and Tiffany Schaeffer had 3 assists.
Prairie hit 18 of 80 shots from the field, 22.5% and 6 of 16 free throws. Kamiah was 11 for 38 from the field, 29%, and never did shoot a free throw as Prairie was whistled for just 4 fouls in the game.

Lady Pirates third at Tip-Off Tourney
The Prairie Lady Pirates’s offense went cold in the fourth quarter as they lost to Culdesac in the Tip-Off Tourney at Kooskia Friday, Nov. 19, but they came back to beat C.V. in the third place game on Saturday.

Prairie jumped out to an 8-2 lead against C.V. and led 8-5 at the end of the first quarter with Brittny Behler scoring half of Prairie’s points.
Culdesac cut the lead to 8-6 in the second quarter but Prairie then went on a 6-0 run to build their biggest lead of the game at 14-6 with 4 different players scoring in the run.
A 3-pointer by Culdesac broke the run but Prairie still managed to lead by 4 at the half at 17-13.
A steal and lay-up by Lauren Merrill opened the second half scoring but Culdesac then went on a 0-6 scoring run to tie the game at 19 with 2:08 left in the third.
Natalie Arnzen then popped in a 3-pointer from the wing and, after a Culdesac basket, Jenna Nida scored a putback to give Prairie a 24-21 lead after 3 quarters.
The fourth quarter was a disaster offensively for the Pirates as Culdesac tightened up their post defense to deny inside baskets and Prairie lost their touch from the outside. Prairie’s only point of the final quarter was a free throw by Behler with 4:11 left and not long after that Behler left the game after aggravating the knee injury that ended her season last year.
A basket and a free throw tied the score for Culdesac with 5:27 left in the game and the Wolves took their first lead on a 3-point play with 4:31 left.
After Behler scored, Culdesac ended the game with a 0-5 run.
Arnzen was Prairie’s high scorer with 7 points followed by Behler with 6. Merrill scored 4, Vanessa Sonnen 3, Bridget Enneking and Nida 2 each and Ashley Jackson 1.
Prairie held a 32-28 rebounding edge led by Arnzen with 9 rebounds. Behler added 6.
Behler, Arnzen and Sonnen had 2 steals each and Merrill had 2 assists.
Prairie was 10 for 39 from the field, 26%, and 4 for 11 from the line, 36%, while Culdesac was 11 for 34 from the field, 32%, and 9 for 17 at the line, 53%.
On Saturday against C.V. Prairie jumped out to an 8-0 lead and led 21-2 at one point in the second quarter on their way to an easy win.Meghan VanderPas looks to make a pass against C.V.
Enneking got Prairie off to a strong start by scoring Prairie’s first 6 points and 8 of their first 10. She wound up with a game-high 12 points.
Prairie forced CV into 17 first half turnovers as they built their lead to 26-7 by halftime.
Prairie hit 6 of 12 shots in the first quarter but just 2 of 14 in the second. Jackson had both of the second quarter field goals and wound up hit all 3 of her shot attempts in the game.
Prairie heated up again in the third quarter as they hit 7 of 13 shots including a 3-pointer by Vanessa Sonnen as the Pirates built their lead to 41-11.
In addition to Enneking’s 12, Long and Behler each scored 8, Vanessa Sonnen 7, Jackson 6, Arnzen 5, Ashley Schultz 4 and Meghan VanderPas 1.
Prairie also dominated on the glass as they held a 49-21 rebounding edge led by Arnzen with 9 and Schultz and Long with 8 each.
Ten of the 11 players recorded a steal in the game led by Jackson who had 4 with Merrill and Schultz collecting 3 steals each. Seven different players recorded an assist with Merrill and VanderPas each serving up a pair of assists.
Prairie connected on 18 of 57 shot attempts, 31.5%, and 14 of 25 free throws, 56%. Meanwhile C.V. hit just 5 of 28 shots, 18%, and 4 of 6 free throws, 67%.
Prairie is now 2-1 on the season with their league opener to have been played Tuesday at Nezperce.

JV team wins Tournament
The Prairie Lady Pirate JV team easily won both of their games at the Tip-Off Tournament Friday and Saturday, Nov. 19-20 at C.V. to claim the first place trophy in the JV portion of the tournament.
On Friday they defeated the host C.V. Rams 30-13 and on Saturday they knocked off Kamiah 34-15 in the championship game.The JV team with the championship trophy.
Prairie actually used a hybrid squad of several JV and C team members.
Against C.V. on Friday Prairie jumped out to a 10-0 lead in the first quarter as Tiffany Schaeffer scored 4 points and Tabitha Sonnen, Carolyn Sonnen and Randi Schumacher scored 2 each.
C.V. finally scored with 1:12 left in the quarter to make it 10-2 at the break.
Neither team scored much in the second quarter with Amber Geis scoring all 4 of Prairie’s points while they held C.V. to just 2 as the Pirates led 14-4 at the half.
C.V. cut the lead to 16-10 in the third quarter but a basket each by Sarah Arnzen and Becky Gehring made it 20-10 after 3 quarters.
Arnzen opened the fourth quarter scoring with a perimeter shot that gave Prairie a 12 point lead.
After a Ram free throw, Prairie had a 6-0 run that pretty much put the game away at 28-11 with 5:00 left.
Schaeffer, Arnzen, Gehring and Geis each scored 6 points in the game to lead the JV scoring with Tabitha Sonnen, Carolyn Sonnen and Schumacher each scoring 2 points.
Prairie held a 36-31 rebounding edge with Carolyn Sonnen and Schumacher each collecting 7 rebounds, Gehring 6 and Christa Wilson 5.
Prairie hit 15 of 52 shots and were 0 for 4 at the line. C.V. was 5 for 26 from the field and 3 for 13 at the line.
Prairie again had a fast start against Kamiah on Saturday, building a 7-0 lead. Kamiah though bounced back to cut the lead to 8-7 by the end of the first quarter.
A 3-pointer by Kamiah to open the second quarter gave them an 8-10 lead that last just over 2 minutes.
Meghan VanderPass hit a perimeter shot with 5:17 left in the half to tie the game then put Prairie ahead for good with a lay-up with 5:00 left. Prairie would go on to score 23 straight points.
The Pirates led 24-10 at the half as VanderPas had 8 second quarter points and Gehring added 5 more.
Prairie outscored Kamiah 9-0 in the third quarter with 5 different players scoring.
Kamiah finally scored again with 5:10 left in the game meaning they were held scoreless for 18:23, better than 2 full quarters.
Prairie scored just 1 point in the fourth quarter but with their huge lead didn’t need to score.
VanderPas wound up leading the scoring with 8 points with Gehring and Tiffany Schaeffer scoring 7 each, Tabitha Sonnen 4, Carolyn Sonnen, Gina Holthaus and Alli Holthaus 2 each and Arnzen 1.
Prairie held a 48-43 rebounding edge led by Gehring with 11. Brooke Holthaus added 8 rebounds.
Twelve different players had a steal led by Alli Holthaus and Tiffany Schaeffer who had 3 each. Carolyn Sonnen and Brooke Holthaus added 2 each.
Schaeffer had 4 assists.
Prairie hit 14 of 61 shots and 6 of 19 free throws while Kamiah was 5 for 41 from the field and 2 for 6 from the line. 3 of Kamiah’s 5 field goals were 3-pointers.
The JV squad is now 3-0 on the season.
