Lady Pirates take fourth at Orofino
The Prairie Lady Pirates won 1 of 3 games at the Orofino Softball Tournament held Friday and Saturday March 11-12 to take fourth place out of 6 teams.Meghan VanderPas is about to connect for a hit against Kellogg.
Prairie defeated Priest River in their opener 8-3 then lost to Orofino 7-15 with both games on Friday. On Saturday in the third place game they lost to Kellogg 6-10 to finish in fourth.
In their opener against Priest River, Prairie took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first with a 2-out rally.
Ashley Schaeffer had led off the inning with an apparent triple but was called out for having missed first base. Meghan VanderPas got the scoring rally started with a 2-out single to left. Ashley Jackson went in as a courtesy runner and moved to second on a passed ball, stole third and then scored on a wild pitch. Natalie Arnzen followed with a walk and stole second. 
She went to third on the same wild pitch Jackson had scored on and scored on Kylie Uhlorn’s single up the middle.
Priest River came back to take the lead in the second with 3 runs on just 1 hit. An error, 2 walks and a hit batter led to the scoring.
Prairie went out in order in the second but had a big 4-run inning in the third highlighted by Uhlorn’s 2-run triple.
Schaeffer led off with a walk and Lindsey Crea followed with a single down the left field line. VanderPas was walked to load the bases. Arnzen scored Schaeffer with a sacrifice fly to center and Uhlorn followed with her triple to score both Crea and VanderPas. Uhlorn then came in on a passed ball for a 6-3 lead.
Ashley Jackson slides into third with a stolen base.Prairie tacked on 2 more runs in the fourth on just 1 hit. Chantel Boniecki led off with a walk and stole second. Brooke Holthaus laid down a bunt and reached when the first baseman dropped the ball. Schaeffer walk to load the bases.
Boniecki beat the throw on Crea’s ground ball to score a run and Holthaus scored on VanderPas’ single to left.
The game ended after the top of the fifth as the time limit had been reached.
VanderPas pitched the entire game allowing 3 runs on 3 hits with 6 walks, 1 hit batter and 1 strikeout.
Uhlorn had a triple and a single while VanderPas had a pair of singles and Crea added another single for Prairie’s 5 hits in the game.
In their second game Friday evening Prairie was beaten 7-15 by Orofino. 
Prairie took the lead with 2 runs in the top of the first but Orofino tied it in the bottom of the inning.
Orofino then took the lead with a 7-run second.
Prairie managed to pull back within 2 with a 5-run third but Orofino put the game away with 6 runs in the bottom of the inning.
The game reached the time limit in the fourth after Prairie was held scoreless.
Schaeffer pitched for the Pirates allowing all 15 runs and 10 hits.
She also had a double for the Pirates while VanderPas, Tiffany Schaeffer, Brooke Holthaus and Boniecki each had a single.Kylie Uhlorn cruises into third after hitting a 2-run triple against Priest River.
In the third place game on Saturday morning a 6-run third inning by Kellogg led to the Pirates losing by a 6-10 score.
Prairie scored 3 in the top of the first to take the lead and led 3-1 going into the bottom of the third when Kellogg erupted for all those runs. Coach Travis Mader said errors really hurt in that inning.
Prairie came back with 2 in the fourth but Kellogg scored 3 in their half of the inning.
Ashley Schaeffer had a double off the wall and a single for Prairie. Arnzen had a double and VanderPas, Uhlorn and Kim Schaeffer each singled.
VanderPas was the starting pitching and went 3 innings with Schaeffer finishing the game.
Prairie is 1-2 on the season.
