21 turn out for track
There are 13 girls and 8 boys on this year’s Prairie High School track team.
Returning are several state qualifiers for last year’s 2-A meet. This will be Prairie’s first year competing at the 1-A level.
The girls team should be strong in the sprints, hurdles and relays led by Tabitha Sonnen the 2-A District champion in the hurdles.
Seniors Vanessa Sonnen and Lauren Merrill qualified in relays last year as did junior Bridget Enneking and sophomores Kayla Uhlenkott and Nicole Nida.
Sophomores Charlene Duman in the shot and discus and Randi Schumacher in the running events also return to the team.
New to the team this year are sophomore Angela Enriquez and freshmen Casandra Schaeffer, Gina Holthaus, Kayla Lorentz and Christa Wilson.
The boys lone returning state qualifier is sophomore J.D. Riener in the discus. Riener also competes in the shot put.
Senior Kelby Wilson just missed out on state in the distance events last year.
Other boys on the team this year are senior Kyle Groom, sophomores Keith Schultz and Jacob Holthaus and freshmen John Rice, Nick Johnson and Carson Heath.
The team’s first meet will be next Tuesday, March 22 at 4 p.m. at Kamiah.
