Lady Pirates win White Pine League Meet title
With three individuals and 2 relays winning regional championships along with numerous other state qualifiers, the Prairie girls track team won the regional team championship with 111 points Friday and Saturday, May 13-14 at Kootenai.The girls track team with their first place team trophy.
The beat out the host school, which was runner-up with 96 points thanks in large point to one competitor who won 4 events.
Winning regional titles were Nicole Nida in the 400 at 1:02.5, Gina Holthaus in the long jump at 14’5” and Vanessa Sonnen in the triple jump at 32’5½”.
The relay champions were the 4x100 team of Casandra Schaeffer, Holthaus, Nida and Vanessa Sonnen in 54.4 and the 4x200 team of Kayla Uhlenkott, Holthaus, Tabitha Sonnen and Vanessa Sonnen in 1:55.0.
The top 4 in each individual event and top 2 relays qualify for the state meet at Boise this weekend.
Nida also qualified in the 100 and 200, taking second in both events in 13.2 and 27.9 respectively.
Tabitha Sonnen qualified in both hurdles races, taking second to Kootenai’s defending state champion in both events, Darcy Collins. Sonnen’s times were 17.1 in the 100 hurdles and 51.5 in the 300 hurdles.
Also qualifying for state was Lauren Merrill who took fourth in the pole vault at 7’6” and the medley relay team of Schaeffer, Holthaus, Uhlenkott and Vanessa Sonnen, which took second in 1:58.1.
The only boys qualifier was J.D. Riener who took fourth in the shot put at 43’11¼” and made it to state in the discus as one of the two at-large best marks not to automatically qualify. He was fifth at regionals with a mark of 115’11”.

State track schedule
Prairie athletes will be competing at the State Track Meet at Bronco Stadium in Boise this Friday and Saturday, May 20-21.
On Friday will be field events and running prelims plus the medley relay final.
All times are Mountain Time.
At 9 a.m. Gina Holthaus will be competing in the first flight of the girls long jump while J.D. Riener will be competing in the second flight of the boys shot put.
At 10:30 a.m. Riener will be in the first flight of the boys discus while Vanessa Sonnen will be competing in the second flight of the girls triple jump.
Lauren Merrill will compete in the pole vault at 5:30 p.m. She’ll be the only Prairie athlete competing that evening.
Starting at 11:30 a.m. on Friday will be the running prelims.
Tabitha Sonnen will be in the first heat of the 100 meter hurdle prelims.
Nicole Nida will be in the first heat of the 100 meter dash prelims then the first heat of the 400 meter dash prelims.
Tabitha Sonnen will be in the second heat of the 300 hurdle prelims and Nida will be in the first heat of the 200 meter dash prelims.
The medley relay final will finish the afternoon prelims.
The Parade of Athletes is scheduled for 4:45 p.m.
On Saturday the running finals will start at 9:30 a.m. with 3-A first then 2-A and then 1-A with girls then boys.
Event finals order will be girls 100 meter hurdles, boys 110 meter hurdles, 4x200 relay, 100 meter dash, 800 meter run, 4x100 meter relay, 400 meter dash, break, 300 hurdles, 200 meter dash, 1600 meter run, 4x400 meter relay and then the team awards.
Admission is $5 per day for adults. Senior citizens, students in grades 1-6 and students in grades 7-12 with activity card are charged $4 per day. Children under 6 are admitted free of charge.
