33 out for volleyball
There are 33 girls out for the Prairie volleyball team this year, equally split into Varsity, Junior Varsity and C teams of 11 players each.Shandrie Poxleitner passes during a drill as Sarah Forsmann watches.
Head coach Danette Moea’i says there may not be any superstar players on the team but there is a lot of athletic talent and good senior leadership. Her goal is to get them to mesh as a team.
Something new this year to Idaho high school volleyball is the Libero which is essentially a back row specialist. Moea’i has targeted junior Shandrie Poxleitner to be Prairie’s Libero this year. If you’ve watched any college or Olympic volleyball the Libero is the player on the court in a different colored uniform. They can be subbed in for any player.
Moea’i also said she has a new setter this year as junior Carolyn Sonnen will follow in the footsteps of her two older sisters at the position.
Seniors Bridget Enneking, Lindsey Crea, Ashley Schaeffer, Natalie Arnzen and Sarah Forsmann are all returnees who started at one time or another last year. Juniors Randi Schumacher got some varsity experience at tournament time last year. Juniors Sonnen, Poxleitner, Kylie Uhlorn, and Tessica Nuxoll are up from the JV’s as is sophomore Tiffany Schaeffer.
The team sees their first action this Thursday, August 25 at Grangeville with the first league match coming Tuesday, August 30 at Genesee. In between they’ll have a tournament at Lewiston on Saturday, August 27 with their first match starting at 9:30 a.m.
Moea’i has a new assistant coach this year in former Prairie player Vikki Duman. She’ll help with the C and JV teams.
On the JV’s this year are juniors Charlene Duman, Meghan VanderPas, Tabitha Seubert and Vanessa Hylton, sophomores Alli Holthaus, Brooke Holthaus, Gina Holthaus, Kim Schaeffer and Sarah Arnzen and freshmen Alicia Pepper and Chelsea Long.
The C team is all freshmen. They are Beth Geis, Britney Gehring, Caitlyn Johnson, Camille Schumacher, Carly Behler, Jennifer Enneking, Kaylee Uhlenkott, Kristi Poxleitner, Leora Laurino, Rachel Kaschmitter and Samantha Johnson.
A C team schedule hasn’t been finalized yet but they will get to play Thursday at Grangeville along with the JV and varsity.
