Grangeville edges Lady Pirates
The Prairie Lady Pirates basketball team opened their season with a narrow 2-point loss at Grangeville 34-36, Tuesday, Nov. 15.
The game was close throughout as neither team could take any kind of an advantage.
Prairie led 4-3 at the close of the first quarter but trailed 14-15 at the half.
Grangeville led 24-27 after 3 quarters.
Even though it was Grangeville’s second game, both teams played like it was a season opener as they both struggled with turnovers.
3-point shooting helped keep Prairie close as they converted 5 from long distance, 2 by Natalie Arnzen and 1 each by Nicole Nida, Tiffany Schaeffer and Brittny Behler.
Behler led the team in scoring with 14 points while Arnzen scored 8. Nida and Schaeffer added 5 apiece while Meghan VanderPas scored 2.
Prairie connected on just 26 percent of their shots while Grangeville wasn’t much better at 30 percent.
Prairie was 7 for 17 at the line while Grangeville was 2 for 8.
Prairie won big in the JV game 48-24. It was their first JV win against Grangeville in several years.

Lady Pirates beat Kamiah
The Prairie Lady Pirates picked up their first win of the season when they knocked off Kamiah 60-23 Friday, Nov. 18 at the Tip-Off Tournament at Kooskia.Tiffany Schaeffer puts up a shot in traffic against Kamiah. Brittny Behler is at left.
After an early 2-2 tie, Prairie scored 15 straight points to take a commanding lead. Brittny Behler scored 7 of those points.
Prairie led 17-5 at the end of the first quarter.
Kamiah was able to cut the lead down to 8 at 20-12 in the second quarter but Prairie then went on another scoring spree as they ended the half on a 14-1 run.
The scoring run extended into the third quarter as Prairie opened the second half with a 12-0 run that gave them a 46-13 lead. In all they had a 22-0 scoring run wrapped around the halftime break.
Prairie shot well in the first half, hitting 14 of 28 attempts. They cooled off in the second half but made up for it at the free throw line as 14 of their 26 second half points came from the line.
The defense throttled the Kubs as the Pirates held them to a 7 for 31 shooting performance and forced 36 turnovers, 22 of them by way of steals.
Behler wound up as Prairie’s leading scorer with 16 points while Nicole Nida also hit double figures with 11.  Becky Gehring scored 9 while Bridget Enneking and Natalie Arnzen scored 6 each. Ashley Jackson scored 5, Meghan VanderPas 4 and Tiffany Schaeffer 3.
Kamiah held a 38-40 rebounding edge. Arnzen led Prairie with 8 rebounds while Enneking and Gehring added 7 each.
Tabitha Sonnen had 6 steals while Nida and Schaeffer had 5 each.
VanderPas and Jackson had 3 assists each.
Prairie wound up 20 for 53 from the field, 38%, and 20 for 41 at the line. They improved in the second half at the line as they converted 14 of 24 after the break. Kamiah was 7 for 31 from the field, 22%, and 6 for 14 at the line.

Lady Pirates win Tip-Off Tournament
The Prairie Lady Pirates won the Tip-Off Tourney Championship by defeating the host Clearwater Valley Rams 43-21 Saturday, Nov. 19 at Kooskia.Natalie Arnzen and Brittny Behler battle C.V. for a rebound.
A young C.V. team that started 3 freshmen and 2 sophomores scored first to take a 0-2 lead but then saw the Pirates outscore them 11-2 the rest of the first quarter.
Natalie Arnzen got the scoring started for Prairie when she was fouled on a putback and added the free throw for a 3-2 lead.
C.V. took back the lead at 3-4 but that was their last lead of the game.
Tiffany Schaeffer put Prairie on top for good with a baseline jumper. 
A steal by Ashley Jackson then led to a basket by Arnzen and Brittny Behler added a free throw.
Jackson ended the first quarter scoring with a 3-pointer off an inbound feed from Behler.
Behler opened the second quarter with a basket. After C.V. scored, Prairie went on a 7-0 run with 5 of those points by Bridget Enneking, to take a 20-6 lead.
The Pirates led 21-8 at the half.
Prairie continued to extend their lead in the second half. Schaeffer scored 5 of Prairie’s 11 third quarter points including a 3-pointer. Her other basket came from just inside the 3-point arc.
Prairie led 32-16 after 3 quarters.
C.V. shaved 2 points off the lead early in the fourth quarter but Prairie then went on an 8-0 run to push the lead to 22 points at 42-20.
Arnzen wound up as Prairie’s leading scorer with 11 points with Behler adding 9. Enneking and Schaeffer scored 7 each while Nicole Nida scored 4, Jackson 3 and Meghan VanderPas 2.
Prairie held a 46-43 rebounding edge led by Enneking who hauled in 19 boards. Behler added 10 rebounds and Arnzen had 8.
Defensively Prairie forced 23 turnovers, 12 by way of steals. Jackson had 4 steals to lead the team.
Behler, Jackson and Schaeffer had 2 assists each.
Prairie was 15 for 61 from the field for 25% and 11 for 19 at the line. C.V. was 7 for 37 from the field, 19%, and 6 for 12 at the line.
Prairie is 2-1 on the season.

JV teams win
The Prairie Lady Pirates picked up a pair of JV wins Saturday, Nov. 19 at the Tip-Off Tournament at Kooskia.
A hybrid JV-Varsity team beat Culdesac’s varsity underclassmen 35-18 and the JV team followed that up with a 38-15 win over Clearwater Valley’s JV team.
The first game developed because Kamiah’s varsity would have played in that game but they wanted to attend their football team’s state championship game instead. Prairie stepped up and offered to fill the void when another school couldn’t be found.
The hybrid team was made up of varsity underclassmen Nicole Nida, Tabitha Sonnen, Meghan VanderPas, Tiffany Schaeffer and Becky Gehring along with JV players Kim Schaeffer, Sarah Arnzen, Jennifer Enneking, Alli Holthaus and Mandy Geis.
Prairie jumped out to an 11-0 lead in the game and dominated Culdesac. Gehring had 3 points and 5 of her team high 10 rebounds in the quarter.
Culdesac finally got on the scoreboard with 2:12 left in the quarter as Prairie led 11-3 at the quarter break.
Prairie scored the first 7 points of the second quarter as the JV members of the team took over. Holthaus and Arnzen each had 4 points in the quarter as Prairie built their lead to 22-7 at the half.
Culdesac scored first in the third quarter but Prairie then scored the next 9 points for a 31-9 lead.
Prairie was outscored in the final quarter but only by a 4-5 count.
Everyone scored in the game with Nida leading the team with 6 points. Sonnen, Holthaus, Arnzen and Tiffany Schaeffer scored 4 each. Kim Schaeffer, Gehring and Enneking scored 3 each and VanderPas and Geis scored 2 each.
Prairie dominated the boards 49-30 led by Gehring’s 10. Sonnen added 9 and Arnzen had 7 rebounds.
Prairie forced 33 turnovers, 22 by steal. Nida led with 5 steals while Enneking had 4 and Geis and VanderPas had 3 each.
Prairie was 15 for 56 from the field, 27%, and 5 for 15 at the line while Culdesac was 7 for 36 from the field, 19%, and 4 for 18 at the line.

The regular JV team played against C.V. and they jumped out to a 7-0 lead as Arnzen scored 5 of those points including a 3-pointer.
Prairie led 9-2 at the end of the quarter.
Scoring was tough for either side in the second quarter as the JV freshmen took over. Kara Guyer and Kaylee Uhlenkott scored 2 each as Prairie outscored the Rams 4-3 in the quarter.
Prairie built their lead in the third quarter as Geis scored 6 of Prairie’s 14 points as they opened up a 27-11 lead.
Uhlenkott took over the scoring load in the fourth quarter as she scored 9 of her game high 13 points, including a 3-pointer.
Arnzen wound up with 7 points while Geis had 6. Kim Schaeffer and Guyer had 4 each and Enneking and Holthaus had 2 each.
Prairie had a 47-33 rebounding advantage led by Uhlenkott who had 10. Kristi Poxleitner added 8 rebounds and Caitlyn Johnson had 6.
Arnzen had 4 steals and Guyer had 3 as Prairie forced 24 turnovers while committing just 7.
The JV’s were 16 for 62 from the field, 26%, and 4 for 14 at the line. C.V. was 6 for 33 from the field, 18%, and 3 for 11 at the line.
