Lady Pirates win twice
The Prairie Lady Pirates won both their games at the annual Prairie Classic Tournament held Dec. 16 and 17 at the PHS gym. They defeated Council 45-14 on Friday and the Lewiston JV 38-31 on Saturday.Ashley Jackson picks up a loose ball against Council.
Against Council Prairie took a 2-0 lead less than a minute into the game on a putback by Natalie Arnzen but then neither team scored until the 3:40 mark when Arnzen again scored on a putback.
Arnzen made it 6-0 40 seconds later and baskets by Ashley Jackson and Nicole Nida gave Prairie a 10-0 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Defensively Prairie allowed Council just 4 shot attempts in the first quarter, blocking 2 of them and picking up a foul on a third meaning Council had only 1 clean attempt in 8 minutes of play.
Becky Gehring opened the second quarter scoring and Council finally got on the board at the 5:42 mark.
Prairie led 18-3 at the half.
Council was able to score 7 points in the third quarter as they hit 3 of 5 shots, including a 3-pointer, but Prairie scored 15 to extend their lead to 33-10 by the end of the period.
The second unit played the entire fourth quarter for the Pirates with Gehring scoring 6 of Prairie’s 12 points in the quarter. Nida scored 4 and Tabitha Sonnen added the other 2 points.
Arnzen, Nida and Gehring each scored 10 points to lead Prairie in scoring. Brittny Behler added 7 points with Tiffany Schaeffer scoring 4 and Jackson and Sonnen 2 each.
Prairie controlled the boards 53-25 with many of those rebounds coming on the offensive end as Prairie gave themselves second, third and even fourth chances to score. Behler had 13 rebounds to lead the team while Arnzen had 9 and Kylie Uhlorn had 7.
Nida and Behler had 3 steals each and Uhlorn had 2 assists.
Prairie was 18 for 69 shooting, 26%, and 9 for 16 at the line. Council was 5 for 18 from the field, 28%, and 3 for 13 at the line.
In Saturday’s game Prairie took a very quick 2-0 lead as Tiffany Schaeffer hit a pair of free throws before the tip-off. Lewiston had put their road numbers in the scorebook but was wearing their home uniforms leading to a technical foul. 
Enneking made it 4-0 with a putback 40 seconds later.
Lewiston answered with a couple of 3-point baskets to take the lead at 4-6.
Prairie then shut down the Bengals as they went on an 11-0 run to take control. Behler had 8 of those 11 points as she hit her first 4 shots of the game.
Lewiston broke the run with another 3-pointer but Behler scored again to make it 17-9 at the quarter. Lewiston’s entire offense in the quarter appeared to be aimed at getting an open 3-point shot as 10 of their 11 shots were from long-distance.

Prairie hit 3 of 5 free throws in the quarter while Lewiston was 3 for 8 as Prairie took a 24-12 lead at the half.
Behler scored 6 of Prairie’s 8 points in the third quarter as Prairie took a 32-17 lead into the final period.
Behler opened the fourth quarter with a putback that gave her 20 points for the night. After that Prairie struggled to score as they added just 4 more points.
Lewiston outscored the Pirates 4-14 over the final 7:05 but the closest they would get would be the final 7-point margin.
In addition to Behler’s game-high 20 points, Nida scored 4, Enneking and Arnzen scored 3 each and Schaeffer, Jackson, Sonnen and Meghan VanderPas scored 2 each.
Prairie outrebounded the Bengals 51-37. Behler led the way with 12 rebounds with Enneking adding 10.
Jackson, VanderPas, Nida and Schaeffer had 1 steal apiece and Enneking, Nida, Arnzen and Gehring each had an assist.
Prairie was 12 for 52 from the field, 23%, and 14 for 25 at the line while Lewiston was 9 for 41 from the field, 22%, and 8 for 21 at the line. 21 of Lewiston’s 41 shot attempts were from 3-point range.
Behler and Arnzen were named to the all-tournament team.
With the wins Prairie improves to 8-2 on the season.
