Two compete in tournaments in Hawaii
Chelsea Long, her mother Sheila and Aunt Wanda traveled from Boise to San Francisco to Honolulu Dec. 28.Chelsea Long, left, and Meghan VanderPas.
Chelsea attended a volleyball tournament in Oahu. They had pool play the first week to get their positions for the tournament which was played the next week.
Meghan VanderPas and her father Mike traveled from Boise to Los Angeles to Honolulu on Dec. 28. Meghan attended a softball tournament, also on Oahu. Like the volleyball tournament, they also had pool play the first week and tournaments the next week. Girls from all across the U.S. played in these tournaments.
Chelsea and Meghan had very different schedules and were only able to get together a couple of times.
There was a Hukilau for all the tournament players on the North Shore. All the players spent an afternoon on the beach and in the water before enjoying a luau.
The girls, at different times, got to see Pearl Harbor, the Dole Pineapple Plantation and the Polynesian Culture Center.
There was a wonderful New Year’s Eve fireworks display on Waikiki Beach. The entire section along the street was lined with people. It was like a very busy shopping day instead of midnight, and it was also about 80 degrees. Very different from what were used to.
On Jan. 5, when all the players from the tournaments were going home as well as all the coaches and chaperons, the main flight was cancelled. It was total chaos at the airport. Long lines and delays. Chelsea and Meghan were put on the same flight from Honolulu to Los Angeles and then they went different directions. It was truly a trip to remember.
