Ferdinand awarded $150,000 grant
Last Thursday afternoon, July 20, Gov. Jim Risch came to Ferdinand, Idaho, to present a grant for $150,000 to the city for general improvements to the city gym.Ferdinand Mayor Paul Schmidt, right, receives a check representing a $150,000 grant to help renovate the Ferdinand Gym from Gov. and Mrs. Jim Risch.
The gym building was formerly part of the Ferdinand school system, and the gym hosted many, many basketball games.
Now it is the place for family reunions, games during the winter, and the community’s place to hold various gatherings.
Michelle Riener, city clerk, will act as oversite person for the use of the grant.  The bids are now planned to go out next week; she will also oversee the work and make sure the bills are paid.
Council members for the City of Ferdinand are Mayor Paul Schmidt, Councilmen Maria Imhoff, Judy Forsman, Ron Riener, and Lori Schmidt.
The Ferdinand grant was one of about 20 given this year in Idaho to rural areas from a fund set up several years ago.  Requests are presented and a committee decides which grants are given.
A second grant was given Thursday to Lewis County and the City of Reubens of $100,000 for improvements in their community centers.
