VFW sponsors essay contests
The Cottonwood VFW Post has announced it is sponsoring the local competitions for Patriot’s Pen and Voice of Democracy.
Patriot’s Pen is an essay competition for 6th, 7th and 8th grade students enrolled in public, private or parochial schools. Home-schooled students are also eligible.

The 2006 theme is “Citizenship in America.”
Essays should be 300 to 400 words in length and typewritten in English with no color or graphics. Essays with fewer than 300 words or more than 400 words will be eliminated from competition. 
All entries must be submitted to Johnson by midnight, Nov. 1, 2006.
Essays are judged with the knowledge of the theme worth 30 points, theme development 35 points and clarity of ideas 35 points.
Local winners will go on to compete at regional level with regional winners competing at state and state winners competing for national prizes, which range up to a $10,000 savings bond.
The Voice of Democracy contest is an oral essay contest, which is open to high school age students. Contact Rick Johnson at the above number for an entry form.
Entrants need to record a 3 to 5 minute (+ or – 5 seconds) essay on a standard cassette tape or audio CD. 
Local VOD winners also advance to regional, state and national levels. The top prize nationally is a $30,000 scholarship.
In VOD judging, originality is worth 30 points, contest is worth 35 points and delivery is worth 35 points.
VOD entries are also due by Nov. 1 to the local VFW post coordinator, Rick Johnson.
