Lady Pirates lose to Lapwai
A 0-13 run by Lapwai in the second quarter broke open a close game and Prairie wound up losing 47-74 to the Wildcats in a non-league game at Cottonwood Tuesday, Nov. 28.Becky Gehring dives on a loose ball as Meghan VanderPas also goes after it. In back is Sarah Arnzen.
Lapwai jumped out to a 0-4 lead but Prairie came back to take the lead at 7-6 and the rest of the first quarter went back and forth with Lapwai holding a slim 13-14 lead at the quarter break. Nicole Nida had 5 points, including a 3-pointer, in the quarter while Kaylee Uhlenkott and Sarah Arnzen scored 3 points each.
Becky Gehring put Prairie ahead with a lay-up 20 seconds into the second quarter but Lapwai took back the lead with a 3-pointer.
Baskets by Nida, Uhlenkott and Tabitha Sonnen had Prairie ahead 21-19 with 4:57 left in the half. That was to be the Pirates last lead of the game.
Lapwai used their full-court pressure to force turnovers and ran off that 0-13 stretch mentioned earlier.
Prairie finally broke the run with a free throw by Nida at the 1:25 mark and she added a basket 30 seconds later. Prairie trailed 25-36 at the half.

At right is Sarah Arnzen.Lapwai scored the first 10 points of the second half to push their lead to 21 points before Nida hit a 3-pointer to put Prairie on the board in the second half. Uhlenkott added her own 3-pointer after a Gehring free throw for a 7-0 run by Prairie.
Lapwai then went on a 2-8 run to end the quarter with a 34-54 lead.
The Wildcats continued to add to their lead in the fourth quarter with the final score equaling their biggest lead of the game.
Nida wound up with 13 points to lead the Pirates as she was 5 for 7 form the field including a pair of 3-pointers. Uhlenkott added 11 points with Jennifer Enneking, Gehring and Meghan VanderPas scoring 6 points each, Arnzen 3 and Sonnen 2.
Lapwai controlled the boards 24-41. Gehring led Prairie with 7 rebounds with Nida adding 5.
Sonnen had 3 steals with Nida, Uhlenkott, Randi Schumacher, VanderPas and Enneking collecting 2 steals each.
Nida had 3 assists with VanderPas adding 2 assists.
Prairie was 15 for 33 from the field, 45%, and 14 for 26 at the line. Lapwai was 32 for 65 from the field, 49%, and 5 for 13 at the line.
Prairie had 36 turnovers while Lapwai had 31.

Prairie controlled the first quarter as they forced Lapwai into 9 turnovers and built a 10-3 lead. Kim Schaeffer, Kara Guyer, Chantel Boniecki, Emily Lerandeau and NaTosha Schaeffer each had 2 points in the quarter for Prairie.
Lapwai opened the second quarter with a 0-6 run to pull within 1 point before Lerandeau scored to put the lead back to 3. NaTosha Schaeffer and Hilaree VanderPas each added a basket to give Prairie a 16-13 lead at the half.
Lapwai’s full-court pressure got to Prairie in the third quarter as the Wildcats forced 12 third quarter turnovers and opened the half with a 0-9 run to take the lead.
Prairie came back to tie the score at 23 on a pair of baskets by VanderPas and a 3-pointer by Lerandeau.
Lapwai answered back though with a 1-8 run to end the quarter and took a 24-31 lead into the fourth.
The fourth quarter was all Lapwai as Prairie couldn’t find the basket. The Pirates had opportunities as they hoisted 21 shots but made just 1, a basket by Lerandeau with 7:10 left. Prairie added just 1 point in the final 7 minutes, a free throw by Christa Wilson, as Lapwai finished the game with a 1-16 run.
Lerandeau had 10 points to lead Prairie with VanderPas scoring 6, NaTosha Schaeffer 4, Kim Schaeffer, Guyer and Boniecki 2 each and Wilson 1.
Prairie held a 50-46 rebounding edge led by Boniecki with 10. VanderPas added 9 rebounds and Kim Schaeffer had 8.
Amber Holthaus, Guyer, Boniecki, Lerandeau and Kim Schaeffer each had 3 steals while Kristi Poxleitner had 3 assists.
Prairie was 11 for 60 from the field, 18%, and 4 for 17 from the line. Lapwai was 20 for 56 from the field, 36%, and 7 for 19 at the line.

Lady Pirates lose in overtime at C.V.
The Prairie Lady Pirates saw Clearwater Valley hit a 3-pointer to send their game into overtime then lost 43-45 at Kooskia Friday, Dec. 1.
Prairie had a 39-36 lead with 13 seconds left when C.V. called a timeout to set up a play. After the play broke down, Kalee Johnson hit a 3-pointer for her only points of the game to force the extra period.
Prairie was led in scoring by Nicole Nida with 13 points. Jennifer Enneking, Meghan VanderPas, Becky Gehring and Kaylee Uhlenkott had 6 points each while Tabitha Sonnen scored 4 points and Sarah Arnzen 2.
Gehring and Uhlenkott had 9 rebounds each for Prairie.
C.V. won the game at the free throw line where they connected on 22 of 33 attempts while Prairie was 13 for 26 at the line.
The loss drops the Pirates to 2-3 on the season.
The JV team also lost as C.V. won 37-57.
