Lady Pirates lose league opener
The Prairie Lady Pirates lost their league opener Tuesday, Dec. 5 as Genesee pulled away in the second half to a 32-46 win at Cottonwood.
Prairie got off to a strong start as they took a 7-2 lead with Becky Gehring scoring 3 points and Nicole Nida and Jennifer Enneking 2 each.
Genesee answered though with a 0-7 run fueled by turnovers forced by their full-court defense. Meghan VanderPas pulls down a defensive rebound as Nicole Nida watches.
Sarah Arnzen connected from 16 feet out to break the run and tie the score at 9 but Genesee added a pair of free throws to take a 9-11 lead at the quarter break.
Randi Schumacher tied the game with a steal and lay-up early in the second quarter and after a Genesee basket, Prairie took the lead on baskets by Kaylee Uhlenkott and Nida, both with assists from Meghan VanderPas, 15-13.
Prairie was held scoreless though over the final 2:20 of the half as Genesee scored 6 straight points to take a 15-19 halftime lead.
Prairie cut the lead to 2 in the third quarter after Enneking’s steal with 3:19 left to make it 19-21 but Prairie wasn’t able to score again until early in the fourth quarter and by then they were behind by 8 points.
Genesee gradually pulled away in the fourth quarter to lead by as many as 15 on 3 different occasions.
Nida led Prairie in scoring with 9 points including a 3-pointer. Enneking, Uhlenkott and Arnzen scored 4 each while Tabitha Sonnen, Gehring and VanderPas added 3 each and Schumacher added 2 points.
Prairie had a slim 31-30 rebounding edge led by Uhlenkott with 9. Gehring added 5 rebounds and Nida and Arnzen had 4 each.
Enneking had 3 steals while VanderPas, Nida, Gehring and Sonnen had 2 each. Uhlenkott and VanderPas had 2 assists each.
Prairie was 13 for 43 from the field, 30%, and 5 for 11 at the line. Genesee was 15 for 34 from the field, 44%, and 14 for 27 at the line.
Prairie won the JV game 40-27.

Prairie took a 15-5 lead in the second quarter but Genesee scored the final 3 points to cut the lead to 15-8 at the half. Mandi Geis had 3 of Prairie’s 7 second quarter points.
In the third quarter Prairie outscored Genesee 10-3 in the first 4 minutes of the quarter to push the lead to 25-11. Guyer had 6 of those 10 points.
Genesee outscored Prairie 3-7 in the final 4 minutes of the quarter but Prairie still took a 28-18 lead into the final period.
Prairie opened the fourth with a 6-0 run, 4 of which were free throws. Geis scored a pair of free throws then Amber Holthaus stole the ball and scored a lay-up and was fouled. Chantel Boniecki then added a free throw to give Prairie a 34-18.
After a pair of free throws by Genesee, Holthaus connected on a 3-pointer to give Prairie their biggest lead of the game at 37-20.
Samantha Frei scored Prairie’s final 3 points when she stole the ball and converted a 3-point play.
Guyer wound up with 13 points to lead the team with Holthaus scoring 6, Geis 5, Mary Shears 4, Boniecki 3 and Kristi Poxleitner, Kim Schaeffer and Emily Lerandeau 2 each.
Genesee had the rebounding edge 39-41. Poxleitner led Prairie with 9 rebounds while Boniecki had 6.
Guyer had 7 steals while Schaeffer and Holthaus had 4 each as Prairie forced the Bulldogs into 39 turnovers while committing just 17.
Prairie was 15 for 69 from the field, 22%, and 8 for 17 at the line. Genesee was 6 for 25 from the field, 24%, and 15 for 20 from the line.

Lady Pirates win at Culdesac
The Prairie Lady Pirates evened their league record at 1-1 with a 55-22 win at Culdesac Friday, Dec. 8.
Prairie shut down the Wolves in the first quarter as they took a 13-2 lead at the break.
Culdesac got some offense going in the second period but the Pirates still added to their lead as they made it 31-15 at the halftime break.
Prairie dominated in the second half as they outscored the Wolves 14-4 in the third and 10-3 in the fourth.
Nicole Nida scored 15 points to lead the Prairie offense with one of her 7 baskets being a 3-pointer.
Randi Schumacher and Sarah Arnzen scored 8 points each, Kylie Uhlorn 6, Becky Gehring and Kaylee Uhlenkott 5 each, Kara Guyer 3, Kim Schaeffer 2 and Jennifer Enneking, Tabitha Sonnen and Kristi Poxleitner 1 each.
Enneking had 8 assists in the game.
With the win Prairie improves to 1-1 in league play and 3-4 overall.
The JV team also picked up an easy win as they scored a 54-10 victory to run their record to 4-3.
