Lady Pirates are 2-2 at State
The Prairie Lady Pirates went 2-2 in their first state appearance since 2002, losing to Garden Valley and Wallace and beating Rimrock and Kootenai at Nampa February 14-17.
Vs. Garden Valley
In their opener on Wednesday against defending state champion Garden Valley, the Lady Pirates were able to hang with them for 10½ minutes but then Garden Valley pulled away for a 29-66 win.Kylie Uhlorn makes a pass against Garden Valley.
Prairie jumped out to the early lead as Nicole Nida and Kaylee Uhlenkott each connected on a 3-pointer in the first 3:30 of the game while they held the Wolverines to just a single basket.
Garden Valley then ran off 6 straight points and took their first lead with a pair of free throws with 2:34 left in the quarter.
Prairie got a pair of baskets from Tiffany Schaeffer in the final minute but trailed 11-15 at the quarter break.
Garden Valley pulled out to an 11-19 lead but a 3-pointer by Sarah Arnzen and a pair of free throws by Tabitha Sonnen allowed Prairie to pull within 5 at 16-21 with 5:29 left in the half.
Garden Valley held Prairie scoreless for nearly 4 minutes while racking up 13 of their own to take a 16-34 lead.
They made it 20-41 by halftime.
It only got worse in the third quarter as Prairie scored just 4 points and in between those 2 baskets the Wolverines put 14 points on the board to make it 24-57 after 3 quarters.
Uhlenkott wound up as Prairie’s leading scorer with just 5 points. Nida, Jennifer Enneking, Schaeffer and Sonnen each scored 4, Arnzen had 3, Chantel Boniecki and Kristi Poxleitner 2 each and Randi Schumacher scored 1.
Garden Valley dominated the boards 28-47. Sonnen led Prairie with 5 rebounds while Uhlenkott had 4. Garden Valley’s Dakota Breish seemed to be grabbing all the rebounds and wound up with 17.
Nida had 4 steals while 6 different Prairie players had 1 assist each.
Prairie was 10 for 44 from the field, 23%, and 6 for 13 at the line while Garden Valley was 27 for 59 from the field, 46%, and 10 for 14 at the line.

Vs. Rimrock
After the beating they took in the first game, the Lady Pirates bounced back to beat Rimrock 45-32 in their second game at State on Thursday, Feb. 15.
Sarah Arnzen passes into Meghan VanderPas in the low post. At right is Jennifer Enneking.Rimrock scored first but Prairie answered back with a 3-pointer by Nida, a basket by Tiffany Schaeffer and a pair of baskets inside by Uhlenkott to take a 9-2 lead.
A 3-pointer each by Enneking and Schaeffer along with another inside basket by Uhlenkott gave Prairie a 17-9 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Meghan VanderPas scored a putback to open the second quarter scoring.
Rimrock answered with a basket but then went scoreless the final 5:06 of the half while Prairie added 8 more points to take a 27-11 lead by halftime. Prairie’s defense totally shut down the Raiders as they forced 13 turnovers in the quarter.
A pair of free throws by Schaeffer and a free throw by Uhlenkott extended the lead to 30-11 in the third quarter.
Over the next 5 minutes Rimrock outscored Prairie 4-8 but Prairie ended the quarter with a basket each by Schaeffer and Nida to take a 38-19 lead into the fourth quarter. Prairie forced another dozen turnovers in the third period.
Rimrock outscored Prairie in the fourth quarter 7-13 as the Pirates coasted to the win.
Prairie forced Rimrock into 41 turnovers in the game with Nida collecting 12 steals. Uhlenkott and Sonnen each added 3 steals.
Schaeffer led the scoring with 12 points with Nida and Uhlenkott scoring 9 each. Gehring and VanderPas scored 4 each while Enneking scored 3, Sonnen 2, and Arnzen and Schumacher 1 each.
Prairie again struggled on the boards as Rimrock outrebounded them 22-47. Gehring and Nida had 4 rebounds each to lead Prairie.
Enneking had 6 assists while Schaeffer and Nida had 4 each.
Prairie was 17 for 58 from the field, 29%, and 7 for 10 at the line. Rimrock was 13 for 37 from the field, 35%, and 24 for 8 at the line.
Rimrock had a 20-0 record in the regular season but lost their do-everything guard Ellie Cantrell to a knee injury early in their first district game and went 0-4 without her. They only made it to state because in District 3 the league champs get a bye into the semifinals, which is basically a bye into the state tournament as that district sends 5 teams.

Vs. Kootenai
In their consolation semifinal game against Kootenai, Prairie fell behind 4-15 but then outscored the Warriors 33-4 over the next 19 minutes of play as they went on to win 49-36 Friday, Feb. 16.Meghan VanderPas shoots against Kootenai. She provided a big spark off the bench to help Prairie erase an 11-point deficit.
Kootenai’s 5’11” junior guard Hannah Nyrop got the Warriors off to a strong start as she hit 5of 7 shots in the first quarter to help Kootenai take that 4-15 lead with 1:41 left in the first quarter.
She then got into foul trouble and scored only 1 point the rest of the game before fouling out with 4:35 to play.
After falling behind 0-8, coach Steve Wilson put VanderPas in and she scored Prairie’s first basket at the 4:01 mark of the first quarter.
Arnzen scored Prairie’s second basket and then after they fell behind 4-15, VanderPas got inside for a pair of baskets in the final 33 seconds that made it 8-15 at the quarter break.
Sonnen opened the second quarter scoring with a 3-pointer and VanderPas followed with a pretty inside move for a lay-up to cut the lead to 13-18. At that point all 13 of Prairie’s points had come from non-starters.
After a Kootenai free throw, Nida scored the first points by a starter as she hit a 3-pointer from just right of the top of the key that tied the score at 16.
Kootenai took back the lead as two players each hit 1 of 2 free throws but that was the last Kootenai scoring for over 9 minutes.
Prairie closed the half with a 6-0 run as Enneking and Gehring each scored a basket and Schaeffer scored 2 free throws.
Prairie opened the second half with an 8-0 run to make it 14 straight points overall. Schaeffer hit a bank shot then Nida hit from the corner for 2. Schaeffer scored a free throw and Enneking hit a 3 from the top of the key to make it 30-18.
Kootenai finally scored in the second half with a free throw but Prairie then ended the quarter with a 7-0 run.
Nida hit a 3-pointer then Uhlenkott and Sonnen each scored a free throw. Schumacher end the third quarter scoring with a driving lay-up. Nida’s 3 and Schumacher’s lay-up were both set up by VanderPas taking a charge on the defensive end.
Prairie took a 37-19 lead into the fourth quarter and although Kootenai rallied some, they never got closer than 11 points.
Nida wound up with 11 points to lead the team in scoring with Schaeffer scoring 9. VanderPas scored 8 while Enneking and Sonnen scored 6 each. Arnzen scored 3 and Gehring, Uhlenkott and Schumacher scored 2 points each.
Prairie was a lot closer on the boards in this game as they were outrebounded just 37-43. VanderPas had 9 rebounds to lead the team while Uhlenkott had 6 and Sonnen 5.
Enneking and Nida had 3 steals each while Uhlenkott and Schaeffer had 3 assists each.
Prairie was 18 for 48 from the field, 38%, and 9 of 20 at the line while Kootenai was 13 for 48 from the field, 27% and also 9 for 20 at the line.

Vs. Wallace
In the Consolation Final against Wallace, Prairie had trouble getting started as they hit just 1 of 12 shots in the first quarter, and weren’t able to recover as Wallace went on to win 44-58 Saturday, Feb. 17.

Wallace then went on a 0-9 run though to take control. 
VanderPas broke the drought with a lay-up with 1:13 left but Prairie trailed 8-18 after one quarter.
Nida opened the second quarter scoring with a 3-pointer to cut the lead to 7 but Prairie was never able to get any closer.
After a Wallace score, Enneking scored to again cut the lead to 7 at 13-20 but Wallace then went on a 4-10 run to push the lead to 14 at 16-30.
A 3-pointer by Enneking cut the led at 11 but Wallace scored the final 5 points of the half to take a 19-35 lead at the break.
Wallace extended the lead to 19 with 6:31 left on a 3-pointer.
Prairie was able to cut the lead to 12 with a 7-0 run started by Schaeffer’s 3-pointer. Uhlenkott scored inside and Gehring added a putback to cut the lead to 28-40.
After a Wallace free throw, Gehring scored another putback to cut the lead to 11 at 30-41.
Schaeffer hit another 3 pointer late in the quarter that pulled Prairie within 10 at 35-45 as the quarter ended.
They were once able to cut the lead to 9 in the fourth quarter at 41-50 when VanderPas scored a bank shot with 5:34 left but Wallace came back with a pair of baskets to quickly put the lead back to 13.
Prairie scored just 3 free throws the rest of the way.
Schaeffer wound up as Prairie’s leading scorer with 12 points while Uhlenkott scored 11. VanderPas and Enneking scored 6 each, Nida 5, and Gehring 4.
Wallace held a 28-33 rebounding edge. Gehring had 6 and Schaeffer, Uhlenkott and Sonnen 5 apiece to lead Prairie on the boards.
Uhlenkott and Nida had 4 steals each while Schaeffer had 3 assists.
Prairie was 14 for 51 from the field, 28%, and 12 for 16 at the line while Wallace was 20 for 35 from the field, 57%, and 15 for 22 at the line.
With their 2-2 record at state, Prairie ends their season with a 17-11 record.
