Pirates pick up first win
The Lady Pirates volleyball team picked up their first win of the season as they swept Timberline 28-26, 25-14, 25-19 at Cottonwood Thursday, Sept. 6. Alli Holthaus served Prairie to a 5-0 lead to open the first game with 3 aces and 2 kills by Kaylee Uhlenkott. The lead didn’t last long though as Timberline came right back to tie the game at 6 and eventually took a 7-10 lead. Prairie took the lead back on a 5-point run by Chelsey Long. She had 3 aces and a kill each by Tiffany Schaeffer and Sam Frei gave prairie a 13-11 lead. Prairie eventually built the lead to 21-15 on another ace by Alli Holthaus. Prairie couldn’t hold the lead though as Timberline came back to get to game point at 22-24. Prairie held off that first game point when Alli Holthaus scored a kill when she poked the ball over on the second hit. Two aces by Uhlenkott gave Prairie their first game-point chance but Uhlenkott then missed a serve to tie the game. Timberline scored an ace then missed their own serve to make it 26-26. Long served up an ace for Prairie’s second chance at game point and Prairie won it when Tiffany Schaeffer and Frei combined to win a jousting battle at the net. In the second game Prairie fell behind early but 3 straight aces by Uhlenkott gave their the lead at 9-6 and they never trailed again. Kim Schaeffer had a long serving run to put Prairie in control. She served up 7 straight points, 4 on aces with Tiffany Schaeffer adding 2 kills as Prairie built an 18-7 lead. Timberline was able to cut the lead to 21-14 but a missed serve, a kill by Kim Schaeffer, an ace by Long and a kill by Uhlenkott ended the game with Prairie on top 25-14. In the third game Prairie fell behind 0-6 and 2-8. From there Prairie fought back into the game, chipping away at the lead until Kim Schaeffer served them into the lead with a 3-point run which included an ace and a kill each by Frei and Tiffany Schaeffer. Timberline came back to tie the game at 13 but a missed served put Prairie ahead for good. Brooke Holthaus had a big serving run to put Prairie in control. She took over at 18-15 and served 3 aces while Uhlenkott had 2 kills and Kim Schaeffer 1 kill as Prairie took a 24-15 lead. Uhlenkott had 9 kills and 4 acres in the match while Tiffany Schaeffer had 9 kills including a stuff block and 1 aces. Kim Schaeffer had 7 kills including a stuff and 5 aces. Chelsey Long had 3 kills and 6 aces while Alli Holthaus had 14 assists, 5 aces and 2 kills. Brianne Stubbers had 6 assists. Frei had 4 kills and Brooke Holthaus had 4 assists and 5 aces. With the win Prairie improves to 1-1 in league play and 1-2 overall. The JV team picked up another win as they beat Timberline 25-15, 25-12, 15-5. The first game was close most of the way although Leora Laurino had a 5-point serving run that turned a 6-8 deficit into an 11-8 lead. She had 3 aces and Jennifer Enneking and Francesca Johnson each had a kill in the run. The game went back and forth from there until Kayla Johnson scored a kill to break a 15-15 tie and took over the serving duties. She served 2 aces, Enneking added a kill, Francesca Johnson 2 kills, Sam Johnson a kill and Kayla then served 3 more aces as she ended the game with a 9-point serving run. Enneking made it 15 straight points as she opened the second game with a 5-point service run which included 4 aces and a kill by Kayla Johnson. Prairie never trailed in the game although Timberline pulled within 2 at 11-9. A missed serve at that point put Enneking back on the service line where she served up 4 more aces with Shelby Duman adding a kill for a 17-9 lead. Prairie steadily pulled away to the final 13-point margin. Duman got Prairie off to a strong start in the third game with 3 straight aces. Kayla Johnson added 2 aces and Amber Frei added 4 more as Prairie built the lead to 12-3. After trading sideouts, Francesca Johnson ended the match with another ace.
Lady Pirates lose at Grangeville The Lady Pirates volleyball team ran into a buzzsaw as they fell in 3 games at Grangeville Monday, Sept. 10, 7-25, 19-25, 11-25. Grangeville did a lot of damage from the service line as they served up 16 aces in the match. The loss drops Prairie to 1-3 on the season. The C and JV teams also lost but no scores were available.
