Lady Pirates beat Asotin
The Prairie Lady Pirates put the defensive clamps on Asotin as they won 39-19 at the Orofino Christmas Classic Basketball Tournament Friday, Dec. 28.
Asotin led only once in the game, at 2-3 after hitting a 3-pointer. Prairie then scored the next 8 straight points, the first 6 by Hilaree VanderPas to make it 8-3 at the quarter break.Jennifer Enneking drives the lane against Asotin.
Kaylee Uhlenkott scored to open the second quarter, and after an Asotin basket, she pumped in a 3-pointer.
Prairie built their lead to 21-10 at the half.
Prairie struggled to score in the third quarter getting only a free throw by VanderPas and a basket by Kara Guyer, but thanks to their defense, still led by 7 going into the fourth quarter as Asotin was able to score only 7 in the quarter.
Asotin scored first in the fourth to pull within 5 at 24-19, but that was their last score of the game as Prairie shut them out over the final 6:45 while scoring 15 straight points.
Of note was that with 6:02 left in the first quarter, Tiffany Schaeffer made her first appearance of the season after having knee surgery just before the season started. Her shooting showed some rust as she missed her first several shots before finally scoring late in the game.
VanderPas wound up leading Prairie in scoring with 11 points with Uhlenkott scoring 9. Jennifer Enneking, Sarah Arnzen and Guyer scored 4 each, NaTosha Schaeffer scored 3 and Schaeffer and Kristi Poxleitner scored 2 each.
Prairie outrebounded Asotin 35-31 with VanderPas grabbing 8 to lead the Pirates. Uhlenkott, Tiffany Schaeffer and Kim Schaeffer added 5 rebounds each.
Enneking and Tiffany Schaeffer had 4 steals each with Poxleitner, Guyer and Uhlenkott nabbing 3 each as Prairie forced Asotin into 31 turnovers while committing 17.
Arnzen had 3 assists to lead the team.
Prairie was 16 for 52 from the field, 31%, and 5 for 12 at the line, 42%. Asotin was 6 for 27 from the field, 22%, and 6 for 13 at the line, 46%.

Lady Pirates beat Pomeroy for tournament title
Despite trailing the whole game until the final few minutes, the Prairie Lady Pirates won the Orofino Christmas Classic Basketball Tournament with a 42-37 win over Pomeroy Saturday, Dec. 29.
Kara Guyer has just used a spin moved to get past a Pomeroy defender for a wide open shot.Pomeroy outscored Prairie 4-11 in the first 6 minutes of the game and led 8-13 at the end of the first quarter.
Pomeroy led by as many as 8 in the second quarter at 10-18, but 6 points by Kara Guyer helped Prairie cut the lead down to just 2 at 18-20 with 3:28 left in the half.
Prairie wasn’t able to score again though before halftime and trailed 18-23 at the break.
Pomeroy started the third quarter with a 2-6 run that gave them their biggest lead of the game at 20-29 with 3:08 left in the third.
At that point Tiffany Schaeffer converted a 3-point play and Kaylee Uhlenkott added a basket inside to cut the lead to 25-29 by the end of the quarter.
Guyer stole the ball and drove for a lay-up to cut the lead to 27-29 2 minutes into the fourth.
Pomeroy scored on a putback but a basket by Uhlenkott and a shot from the perimeter by Jennifer Enneking tied the score at 31.
Pomeroy took the lead back with a basket but a short jumper by Tiffany Schaeffer re-tied the score at 33 and 40 seconds later, Prairie took their first lead when Hilaree VanderPas rebounded her own missed shot and scored to make it 35-33.
Neither team scored for nearly 2 minutes until Pomeroy scored a free throw to cut the lead to 1.
Pomeroy missed on a shot to take the lead and Enneking rebounded with 44 seconds left. As she tried to dribble upcourt, Pomeroy was called for an intentional foul. Enneking made 1 of the free throws and on the ensuing inbounds play Tiffany Schaeffer was quickly fouled and converted both free throws for a 4-point lead.
After a Pomeroy miss from 3-point range, Guyer was fouled and made one of the free throws to make it 39-34.
Pomeroy then hit a 3-pointer to cut the lead to 2 with 12 seconds left.
Tiffany Schaeffer was fouled after Prairie inbounded and made the first free throw. Uhlenkott rebounded her missed second shot and passed out to Schaeffer, who was fouled again. Schaeffer made both free throws to put the lead back to 5 at 42-37, which wound up as the final score.
Schaeffer wound up as the leading scorer with 12 points in just her second game back from surgery. Guyer scored 11 and Uhlenkott scored 10. VanderPas added 4 points, Enneking 3 and Sarah Arnzen 2.
Prairie outrebounded Pomeroy 34-27, 13-4 in the final quarter. Guyer had 7 rebounds to lead the team while Arnzen had 6 and VanderPas, Uhlenkott and Kim Schaeffer had 5 each.
Uhlenkott and Guyer had 3 steals each and Uhlenkott had 3 assists.
Prairie was 16 for 38 from the field, 42%, and 10 for 21 at the line, 48%, while Pomeroy was 13 for 41 from the field, 32%, and 9 for 16 at the line, 56%. In the fourth quarter Prairie was 5 for 7 from the field and 7 for 12 at the line while Pomeroy was 3 for 14 from the field and 1 for 3 at the line.
With the win Prairie improves to 8-5 on the season.
