Lady Pirates finish fourth at District
The Prairie Lady Pirates fell one win short of a state berth as they finished in fourth place at the District basketball tournament.Sarah Arnzen is about to put up a 3-point shot against Lapwai.
The Lady Pirates lost to Lapwai 36-50 on Tuesday, Feb. 5, beat Troy 45-22 on Wednesday, Feb. 6 then lost to Kendrick 37-41 in the third place game on Friday, Feb. 8.
Vs. Lapwai
In the game against Lapwai Kim Schaeffer scored Prairie’s first 5 points then Sarah Arnzen popped in a 3-pointer that made it 8-3.
A basket by Kaylee Uhlenkott, a free throw by Kim Schaeffer, a basket by Tiffany Schaeffer and a free throw by Kara Guyer had Prairie up 14-8 with 2:08 left in the quarter.
Lapwai cut the lead back to 2 but Tiffany Schaeffer scored another basket in the final seconds for a 16-12 Prairie lead.
Prairie’s offense went ice-cold in the second quarter but their defense kept them in the game as Lapwai scored only 7 points while Prairie was missing their first 13 shots of the quarter.
Prairie managed to tie the score at the half as Arnzen bombed in a 24 footer as time expired to make it 19-19.
In the third quarter Lapwai’s pressure defense started getting to the Pirates as they turned the ball over as many times in the third quarter as in the entire first half. They were held scoreless for the first 4 minutes while Lapwai built a 19-27 lead.
Tiffany Schaeffer’s free throw with 4:00 left broke the scoreless streak. She added a driving lay-up and Kristi Poxleitner scored a putback to pull Prairie within 3 at 24-27.
It was still a 3-point margin after 3 quarters at 26-29.
Uhlenkott opened the fourth quarter scoring with a game-tying 3-pointer but Lapwai then went on a 2-12 run to take control.
Tiffany Shaeffer wound up with 11 points to lead the Pirates with Uhlenkott scoring 7. Arnzen and Kim Schaeffer scored 6 each while Jennifer Enneking, Poxleitner and Guyer scored 2 each.
Lapwai held a 35-41 rebounding edge with Guyer leading Prairie with 9 rebounds. Tiffany Schaeffer added 8 and Hilaree VanderPas had 7.
Guyer had 4 steals and Enneking had 2 assists.
Prairie was 13 for 41 from the field, 32%, and 7 for 17 at the line, 41%, while Lapwai was 19 for 50 from the field, 38%, and 10 for 23 at the line, 43%.

Vs. Troy

Prairie’s first two baskets of the game were the result of Troy turnovers. Tiffany Schaeffer scored 9 of Prairie’s 14 first quarter points. The Pirates connected on 5 of 8 shots in the quarter and were 4 of 5 at the line.
Prairie built a 14-4 lead with Troy scoring a late 3-pointer to make it 14-7 at the quarter break.
Prairie’s shooting cooled off in the second quarter as they hit just 2 of 10 shots but they held Troy to just 1 of 8 shooting and 2 points as the Pirates led 21-9 at the half.
Troy nearly doubled their score in the third quarter but still lost ground as Prairie outscored them 14-8 to take a 35-17 lead into the final period. Troy got no closer than 10 points in the second half at 23-13. Prairie then went on a 10-2 run to push the lead to 18.
Troy spent much of the fourth quarter jacking up 3-pointers, making only 1 of 5 tries from long distance and 2 of 10 overall.
Tiffany Schaeffer scored 16 points to lead the Pirates with Uhlenkott scoring 12. VanderPas scored 5, Kim Schaeffer and Poxleitner 3 each, Guyer and Mary Shears 2 each and Enneking and NaTosha Schaeffer 1 each.
Rebounding was even at 27 each with Guyer again leading the Pirates with 7 rebounds.
Enneking and Tiffany Schaeffer had 3 steals each and Uhlenkott had 3 assists.
Prairie was 16 for 43 from the field, 37%, and 13 for 20 at the line, 65%, while Troy was 9 for 32 from the field, 28%, and 2 for 3 at the line, 67%.

Vs Kendrick
Against Kendrick Prairie took an early 5-2 lead but Kendrick then scored 7 straight points and Prairie never again held the lead.Tiffany Schaeffer looks for an opening through the Kendrick defenders' arms.
Sarah Arnzen opned the game’s scoring with a 3-pointer from the corner and Tiffany Schaeffer added a putback for that 5-2 lead.
Kendrick then scored their 7 straight and led 5-9 at the quarter break.
Arnzen’s second 3-pointer cut the lead to 1 at 8-9 but Kendrick answered with a basket.
Prairie cut the lead back to 1 at 13-14 on a basket by Uhlenkott but Kendrick closed the half with a 0-6 run for a 13-20 halftime lead.
For the third straight quarter Arnzen opened the scoring with a 3-pointer to cut the lead to 4. 
Prairie hit 6 of 10 shots in the third quarter with Uhlenkott scoring 3 baskets but the Pirates could get no close than 2 points because every time they scored, Kendrick was able to answer. Most of the time it was Sarah Smith, who scored 8 points in the quarter.
Prairie trailed 26-30 heading into the fourth.
Hilaree VanderPas opened the fourth quarter scoring with a pair of free throws to cut the lead to 2 but Kendirck was able to push the lead to 7 at 28-35.
A short bank shot by Guyer and a 3-pointer by Enneking cut the lead to 33-35 with 4:43 left to play but Kendrick answered with their own 3-pointer and then a steal led to a lay-up and a 33-40 lead with 2:37 left.
With 40 seconds left Smith made just 1 of 2 free throws to make it 35-41 but Prairie was only able to score once, a banked in 18 footer by Uhlenkott with 0.3 seconds left that cut the lead to 4.
Uhlenkott was able to steal the inbounds pass and launch a 3-pointer but she needed to be fouled and have the shot go in for Prairie to have a chance and neither happened.
Uhlenkott wound up with 12 points to lead the Pirates with Arnzen scoring 9. Enneking and Tiffany Schaeffer scored 5 each while Kim Schaeffer, Guyer and VanderPas scored 2 each. Smith had 19 to lead Kendrick.
Kendrick had a 23-26 rebounding led with Tiffany and Kim Schaeffer leading Prairie with 5 rebounds each.
Enneking had 7 steals and Arnzen had 4 assists.
Prairie was 15 for 41 from the field, 37%, and 3 for 5 at the line, 60%, while Kendrick was 14 for 32 from the field, 44%, and 12 for 18 at the line, 67%.
Prairie ends their season with a 15-9 record.
