According to David Abbott, Program Director of the Wenatchee Valley Medical Lab Technician (MLT) Program, Riener’s test score places him in the Top 10% nationally of other MLTs taking the test.  “I just received a report from the ASCP MLT Exam which Derrek recently took and passed and I thought you would like to know how well he did on this event.  First, I should say that he has come in first in the class- Numero Uno…Thanks for a great job in training him with you and your staff,” said Abbot in an email to Kevin Daly, SMH Lab Director.
Riener graduated in August, 2007 and took the test in February, 2007.  He did a clinical rotation at St. Mary’s while completing his course requirements and is now employed full time at the hospital.  To remain certified by the American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP) he will need to regularly obtain credits for ongoing education.
Riener was raised in Cottonwood and began his studies at Walla Walla Community College, but switched to Wenatchee Valley College for the second half of his training.
“I am glad to be in Cottonwood working at a job I enjoy.  It’s flattering to have graduated as first in my class and to have scored so well on the certification exam,” said Riener.  “I appreciate all the help I received along the way.”
