out for volleyball
There are 26 girls out for volleyball this year at Prairie High School. 
Ten of those are on the varsity squad, which has 4 regulars plus 2 District Tournament call-ups returning from last year’s squad. Returning varsity regulars are seniors Kaylee Uhlenkott, Chelsea Long and Brianne Stubbers and junior Sam Frei. District call-ups last year were seniors Jennifer Enneking and Leora Laurino. New to the varsity this year are senior Samantha Johnson, junior Casey Bruegeman and sophomores Francesca Johnson and Kayla Johnson. New head coach Vikki Riener says the “attitude is awesome” and she is looking forward to the upcoming season. Last year’s C team coach Marlene Forsmann has moved up to the JV position and Denise Uhlenkott will be coaching the C team this year. JV team members are juniors Justina Zigler and Gina Seubert, sophomores Shelby Duman, Haleigh Schmidt and Meaghan Bruner and freshmen Megan Sigler, MaKayla Schaeffer and Ashley Shumway. C team members are junior Sam Spencer, sophomores Dani Cochran and Betty Clark and freshmen Sam Poxleitner, Monica Lustig, Demetria Riener, Amanda Stinson and Savannah Poxleitner. The league set-up will be different this year as Class 1-A has split into two divisions with each having an 8-team state tournament instead of the 16-team set up in the past. Nezperce, Highland and Culdesac will all be in the smaller school division and they will have their own district tournament. The remaining teams will be competing for two state berths at District with the third place team participating in a play-in game for a state berth. The team saw their first interscholastic action Tuesday at a Jamboree in Grangeville. Their first regular season match will also be at Grangeville Thursday, August 28 against the Lady Bulldogs.
