Shumway breaks 60 foot barrier
Kyler Shumway had been approaching it all season and Friday, May 8 at the Regional Track Meet at Kamiah finally broke the 60 foot barrier in the shot put as he won the event with a toss of 60’½”.Kyler Shumway as he prepares to launch his 60 foot throw in the shot put.
He also won the discus on Saturday with a mark of 143’3” and was third in the 100 meter dash with a time of 12.3, qualifying for state in that event as well.
Devin Schmidt qualified for state in two individual events tying for second in the triple jump at 39’10” and taking fourth in the discus at 132’7”. Schmidt is also the first Prairie male athlete we know of to make it to state in 3 different sports in the same school year.
Brock Heath took third in the 3200 in 10:24.63 and also qualified as an at-large in the 1600 after taking fifth at Regionals with a time of 4:56.01.
Ryan Dalgliesh also qualified for state as an at-large after finishing fifth in the 400 meter dash in 56.87.
For the girls MaKayla Schaeffer won a district title with a personal best mark of 15’5” in the long jump.
Kaylee Uhlenkott took second in the shot put at 35’10” and fourth in the discus at 103’7” to qualify for state in both events. She is the defending state titlist in the shot put.
Katie Nuxoll set a new personal best in the triple jump with a mark 33’¾” and took second in the event.
NaTosha Schaeffer also qualified for state by taking third in the 100 meter hurdles in 17.7.
Both the boys and girls teams qualified several relays.
The boys 4x400 team took second in a time of 3:42.3 while the 4x200 team took third but qualified as an at-large with a time of 1:37.3. Making up the 4x400 team are Dalgliesh, Justin Schmidt, Heath, and Devin Schmidt. On the 4x200 team are Shumway, Heath, Justin Schmidt and Devin Schmidt.
For the girls the 4x100, 4x200 and 4x400 teams all qualified as each took 2nd place. The 4x100 team had a time of 53.0, the 4x200 team 1:50.3 and the 4x400 team 4:30.5. Kristin Hill, NaTosha Schaeffer, Nuxoll and MaKayla Schaeffer make up all three teams.
As a team the boys placed 4th at Regionals with 74 points while the girls were 5th with 69 points.
The state track meet gets underway this Thursday, May 14 at Bronco Stadium in Boise. At 7 p.m. Thursday, Uhlenkott will be competing in the discus while Shumway will compete in the shot put.
At 9:30 a.m. the 3200 finals start. Heath will be running in the last of 6 races so it will be probably be close to 11 a.m. before he gets to run.
At 10:30 a.m. Schmidt will try to compete in both the triple jump and discus, which are scheduled for the same time. Shumway will also be competing in the discus, Uhlenkott will be competing in the shot put and Nuxoll will be competing in the triple jump.
At 11:30 a.m. the running prelims will start and run through about 4:30.
On Saturday, May 16 the running finals will start at 9:30 a.m. Included will be all the relays in which Prairie qualified.
Admission to the State Track Meet is $5 per day for adults and $4 per day for senior citizens and students.
