Uhlenkott, Shumway repeat as state champs
Kaylee Uhlenkott for the third time and Kyler Shumway for the second time repeated as state champions in the shot put at the 1-A State Track Meet in Boise this past weekend.As defending state champions Kaylee Uhlenkott and Kyler Shumway helped carry in the flag during the Parade of Athletes.
Kaylee Uhlenkott won her third straight shot put state championship with a personal best mark of 40’1” last Friday, May 15 at the State Track Meet at Boise. The mark was just half an inch short of the school record set by Cindy Schultz at the State Track Meet back in 1978. That followed up a disappointing discus competition on Thursday evening when she scratched all three attempts.
Kyler Shumway won his second straight state title with a mark of 56’1¾”. He also placed 4th in the discus with a mark of 142’6”. In the 100 meter dash prelims he ran a 12.17 but it wasn’t enough to get him into the finals.
Katie Nuxoll took second in the triple jump with a personal best of 33’1¾”, only 1¼” shy of the school record set by April Riener.
MaKayla Schaeffer took third in the long jump with a personal best mark of 15’11¾”.
Devin Schmidt took fourth in the triple jump with a mark of 40’0” and was 13th in the discus with a mark of 119’3”.
Brock Heath took 4th in the 3200 with a time of 10:23.63 and was 8th in the 1600 in 4:51.49.
NaTosha Schaeffer was 4th in the 100 hurdles with a time of 17.80.
Ryan Dalgliesh ran a time of 56.23 in the 400 meter dash prelims but it was fast enough to get him to the finals.
In relays the three girls relays all took second place. In the 4x100 and 4x200 Prairie took second to Troy in both events in times of 52.12 and 1:50.20 respectively. The 4x400 team took second to Lapwai in 4:16.84. Making up all three relay teams were Kristin Hill, NaTosha Schaeffer, Nuxoll and MaKayla Schaeffer.
For the boys the 4x400 team earned a medal with a third place finish in 3:41.10 while the 4x200 team took 7th place in 1:38.11. Dalgliesh, Heath, Justin Schmidt and Devin Schmidt made up the 4x400 team while Shumway, Heath, Dalgliesh and Devin Schmidt made up the 4x200 team.
Everyone who qualified for state from Prairie came home with at least one state medal.
As a team the girls finished in a 5th place tie with Troy with 53 points, 1 point shy of earning a team trophy.
The boys team placed 8th with 34 points.
