26 out for Volleyball
There are 26 girls out for volleyball at Prairie High School this year with just 4 returning varsity players.PHS volleyball co-captain Francesca Johnson makes a pass while from left Kayla Johnson and fellow co-captain Casey Bruegeman wait their turn in the drill.
Those returnees from last year are senior Casey Bruegeman, juniors Francesca Johnson and Kayla Johnson and sophomore Megan Sigler.
Kayla Johnson is the only returning starter although Bruegeman and Francesca Johnson both saw a lot of floor time as they were regulars in the rotation.
Bruegeman and Francesca Johnson have been named the co-captains for the squad.
Sigler will be the setter in a one-setter offense with Bruegeman and Kayla Johnson as the middle blockers, Francesca Johnson, Sam Frei and Meaghan Bruner as outside hitters, Shelby Duman and Gina Seubert as right-side hitters and Justina Zigler as Libero. Frei, Zigler and Seubert are seniors and Bruner and Duman are juniors.
Swing players who will see time at both the JV and varsity level are sophomores Sam Poxleitner, Monica Lustig and Ashley Shumway.
Head coach Vikki Riener said she likes the way her team moves and said they are the best team she’s seen at Prairie as far as talking to each other on the floor. She feels they should have a good year if they can keep the motivation they have now.
The squad saw their first action Tuesday at a Jamboree at Grangeville and jump right into league action Thursday, August 27 against old Central Idaho League foe Potlatch, which is now also a White Pine League member. The match will be at Poltatch. They will then play at Grangeville next Tuesday, Sept. 1. The JV’s will also travel to Genesee Saturday, August 29 for a tournament.
Players on the JV squad which will be coached by Marlene Forsmann are Poxleitner, Lustig and Shumway along with junior Dani Cochran, sophomore Demetria Riener,  and freshmen Kayla Frei, Tyler Workman, Stephanie Johnson and Tanna Schlader. Poxleitner and Frei will play middle, Lustig and Workman will be setters with Riener, Shumway and Cochran as outside hitters and Johnson as Libero. Schlader will probably see playing time at each of the front row positions.
The C team is all freshman except for one senior transfer student.
Taylor Heitman and Hope Vanator will be the setters, Claire Whitley and Shelby VonBargen the middles, Sheryl Gehring and Kelsey Tidwell the outside hitters and Rachel Falzon the right side hitter while senior Jessica Bartlett will be a defensive specialist.

The PHS  JV and C volleyball teams scrimmaged Tuesday morning at practice.
