Letters to the editor from this week's Chronicle:

Letters to the Editor
Governor Otter has again asked the public for suggestions to fix the shortfall in funds. In addition, Shirley Ringo Democrat/Moscow and her associate Judith Brown/ economic consultant have said "We're headed for a train wreck for fiscal 2011".
Representative Ringo and Ms. Brown
suggest an increase in the State Income Tax; and mention the elimination of some of the 120 or so sales tax exemptions (I call them freeloaders). They say this cannot be done quickly. I hasten to disagree. We do not need an income tax increase. Here’s what WILL WORK and can be done right now. SUSPEND ALL SALES TAX EXEMPTIONS FOR TWO YEARS. Rededicate the original 3% sales tax to the schools. Ad services to the sales tax (no more free ride on services). Review each sales tax exemption with the question," Why should you not support our schools and highway needs ?" If the review committee finds a legitimate reason for an exemption; restore it. If not, NO. DO NOT INCREASE THE SALES TAX RATE; simply spread it around fairly. This can be done with a 60 day sign up period for those who do not already have a sales tax number/account (most merchants do).
