Lady Pirates lose to Grangeville
The Prairie Lady Pirates had a lot of trouble getting any offense going as they lost to Grangeville 14-50 as part of the Idaho County Shootout Friday, Dec. 4 at Cottonwood.Megan Sigler passes the ball down to Kayla Johnson in the Idaho County Shootout game against Grangeville.
It took half the first quarter for Prairie even to get any offense set up as Grangeville came out in their usual full-court pressure and forced 12 first quarter turnovers as they built a 2-15 lead by the end of the period.
Megan Sigler kept Prairie from being shut out in the quarter with a lay-up at the 3:30 mark of the period.
Prairie scored first in the second quarter thanks to a steal by Mary Shears that led to a basket by Kayla Johnson but Grangeville then outscored Prairie 3-13 the rest of the quarter to take a 7-28 halftime lead.
Francesca Johnson scored a basket and a free throw for Prairie’s other 3 points in the quarter.
It was more of the same in the third quarter as Prairie only points came on an inbounds play from Amber Holthaus to Shears.
Grangeville took a 9-42 lead into the fourth quarter which led to a running clock in the final period.
Holthaus and Meaghan Bruner scored a basket each in the final period and Shears added a free throw.
Francesca Johnson and Shears were Prairie’s leading scorers with just 3 points each while Sigler, Holthaus, Bruner and Kayla Johnson had 2 points each.
Grangeville also led on the boards 29-36. Shears had 12 rebounds to lead Prairie.
Shears had 4 steals while Sigler had 3 steals and 2 assists.
Prairie was just 6 for 32 from the field, 19% and 2 for 9 at the line, 22%. Grangeville was 20 for 50 from the field, 40%, and 7 for 16 at the line, 44%.
Prairie had 35 turnovers in the game against Grangeville’s full court pressure.
The loss drops Prairie to 0-4 on the season.
The JV team meanwhile picked up their second win in as many tries against Grangeville 42-28.
Kendal Schumacher and Taylor Heitman scored 4 points each as Prairie jumped out to an 8-0 lead on Grangeville. Prairie led 10-4 at the end of the first quarter.
A putback by Betty Clark opened the second quarter then Grangeville scored 4 straight to cut the lead to 12-8.
Prairie was able to stretch the lead out to 21-13 by the end of the half though with Tanna Schlader scoring 4 second quarter points and Callie Mader adding 3.
Prairie held Grangeville to just 2 points in the third quarter and held them scoreless for the final 7:04 of the period as Prairie scored 15 straight points to blow the game open and take a 37-15 lead into the final period.
Heitman scored 8 of her game-high 14 points in the period and Demetria Riener added 5 points.
Prairie led 42-19 with 3:31 left when they put the C players in to finish the game. Grangeville rallied to scored the final 9 points of the game but still lost by 14.
Heitman scored 14 to lead Prairie with Schlader scoring 7. Schumacher and Riener scored 5 each with Mader scoring 4, Jenny Gimmeson 3 and Leslie Nida and Clark 2 each.
Prairie held a 46-40 rebounding edge led by Schumacher with 8. Schlader added 6 rebounds and Heitman and Clark had 5 each.
Mader had 6 steals and 5 assists while Samantha Keating had 5 steals.
Prairie was 17 for 46 from the field, 37%, and 8 for 30 at the line, 27%. Grangeville was 10 for 47 from the field, 21%, and 8 for 25 at the line, 32%.
