Lady Patriots win on Senior Night
On Senior Night the Prairie Lady Pirates rolled to a 51-28 win over Orofino Thursday, Jan. 14 at Cottonwood.
Since their final home game is part of a girls-boys quad on Jan. 22, they made this game their senior night.
The three Prairie seniors all came up big in the game as well. Mary Shears had a double-double with 17 points and 14 rebounds while NaTosha Schaeffer grabbed 11 rebounds and Amber Holthaus had 4 assists and 3 steals.
Prairie took a 16-9 lead by the end of the first quarter and led 28-14 at the half.
They extended the lead to 43-17 by the end of the third quarter before allowing Orofino their only double digit quarter in the fourth.
Megan Sigler added 7 points while MaKayla Schaeffer and Kayla Johnson scored 6 each. NaTosha Schaeffer and Kendal Schumacher scored 4 each while Holthaus scored 3 and Meaghan Bruner and Shelby VonBargen scored 2 each.
It was also coach Rusty Lorentz’ 50th birthday.
In the JV game Prairie attempted over 100 shots from the field in the game as they rolled to a 61-38 victory.

Lady Pirates lose to Troy
The Prairie Lady Pirates were able to stay with Troy for 3 quarters but couldn’t overcome a 12 for 12 showing at the free throw line by Troy in the fourth quarter as they lost 35-50 Tuesday, Jan. 12 at Cottonwood.Mary Shears gets checked by Troy's Tai Jensen.
The Lady Pirates came out hot in the game as they opened up a 7-0 lead and held Troy scoreless for the first 4 minutes of play.
Mary Shears, Kayla Johnson and Amber Holthaus each scored a basket and Holthaus added a free throw for the 7-0 lead.
Troy bounced back though with a couple of 3-pointers and managed to tie the score at 8 by the end of the first quarter.
In the second quarter Megan Sigler connected on a pair of 3-pointers to help Prairie lead by as many as 5 at 20-15 only to see Troy score the final 6 points of the half and take a 20-21 lead.
Troy led by as many as 7 at 24-31 in the third quarter but NaTosha Schaeffer scored Prairie’s final 7 points of the third quarter on a basket, a 3-pointer and 2 free throws to pull Prairie back within 3 at 31-34 at the end of the third.
In the fourth quarter though Prairie struggled to score as they managed only 2 baskets by MaKayla Schaeffer. Meanwhile Prairie was fouling the Trojans and Troy was making all their free throws. Troy only scored 2 baskets themselves in the fourth quarter but added 12 free throws to pull away to the final 15 points margin.
Sigler, Shears and NaTosha Schaeffer each scored 7 points to lead Prairie in scoring with Holthaus adding 6 points and Johnson and MaKayla Schaeffer 4 points each.
Prairie outrebounded the Trojans 30-28 with Johnson and Shears grabbing 8 rebounds each while NaTosha Schaeffer had 7.
Holthaus had 4 steals and NaTosha Schaeffer had 2 assists.
Prairie was 13 for 43 from the field, 30%, and 6 for 12 at the line, 50%. Troy was 15 for 43 from the field, 35%, and a perfect 14 for 14 at the line.
The JV game was just 3 quarters long and Prairie got off to a horrible start as they went scoreless for the first 13 minutes and lost 17-28.
Prairie was 0 for 7 from the field and 0 for 8 at the line in a disastrous first quarter that saw Troy take a 0-6 lead.
Troy was up 0-12 in the second quarter before Jenny Gimmeson finally got Prairie on the scoreboard with a driving lay-up at the 2:49 mark of the second quarter.
Kendall Schumacher then added a pair of baskets to cut the lead to 6-12. Prairie trailed 7-13 at the half.
Troy scored the first 6 points in the third quarter before Taylor Heitman hit a pair of free throws. Prairie never got any closer than 9 points the rest of the way.
Schumacher wound up as the leading scorer with 8 points with Gimmeson scoring 4, Heitman and Samantha Keating 2 each and Tanna Schlader 1.
Prairie outrebounded Troy 27-21 with Shelby VonBargen leading the team with 7 rebounds.
Schlader had 4 steals and 2 assists.
Prairie was 7 for 28 from the field, 25%, and 3 for 18 at the line, 17%. Troy was 11 for 26 from the field, 42%, and 4 for 8 at the line, 50%.

Lady Pirates can't hold halftime lead at C.V.
The Prairie Lady Pirates played a great first half but had a disastrous third quarter as they lost to Clearwater Valley 29-48 Saturday, Jan. 16 at Kooskia.

C.V. though came right back with a 0-9 run to take a 6-9 lead.
Megan Sigler then drained a 3-pointer to tie the game and MaKayla Schaeffer scored inside to give Prairie an 11-9 lead at the end of the first quarter.
A 3-pointer and a free throw to open the second quarter put C.V. back on top but MaKayla Schaeffer hit both ends of a 1 and 1 to tie the game and Shears got a second chance at the front end of a 1 and 1 after a line violation to put Prairie ahead by 1. 
C.V. came back with a basket to retake the lead but Amber Holthaus tied it with a free throw and Sigler scored a driving lay-up after a steal by Meaghan Bruner to put Prairie back in the lead. Shears added a free throw to make it 18-15 at the half.
In the third quarter C.V. amped up the defensive pressure forcing 12 Prairie turnovers. Prairie was only able to attempt 5 shots while C.V. turned the turnovers into points and opened the third quarter with a 0-12 run.
Shears broke the scoring drought at the 2:13 mark but C.V. then scored another 8 straight points before Shears ended the quarter with a pair of free throws. Prairie was outscored 4-20 in the quarter, turning a close game into a blowout.
Sigler added 5 points in the fourth quarter to win up as Prairie’s leading scorer with 10 points.
Shears and MaKayla Schaeffer scored 8 points each while NaTosha Schaeffer scored 2 and Holthaus scored 1.
CV had a 31-34 rebounding edge. Shears led Prairie with 13 rebounds.
Bruner had a pair of steals and Holthaus had 2 assists.
Prairie was 9 for 30 from the field, 30%, and 8 for 19 at the line, 42%. C.V. was 19 for 52 from the field, 37%, and 8 for 16 at the line, 50%.
With the loss Prairie drops to 5-12 on the season and 2-6 in league play.
The JV game was close most of the way but too many turnovers and a 6-14 deficit at the free throw line led to a 30-38 loss.
The score was tied at 6-6 in the first quarter when C.V. went on a 0-6 run to take the lead.
A free throw by Tanna Schlader and a basket by Callie Mader cut the lead to 9-12 by the end of the quarter.
In the second quarter C.V. hit a pair of free throws to open the scoring but Taylor Heitman came back with a pair of free throws and a basket to pull the Pirates within 1 at 13-14. That was it for the Prairie first half scoring though as C.V. took a 13-19 lead at the break.
Prairie got within 2 in the third quarter after a pair of baskets by Schlader and then after a 0-5 C.V. run, Prairie got back within 1 by the end of the quarter on 2 free throws by Heitman and 2 baskets by Shelby VonBargen at 25-26.
Prairie’s shooting went cold in the fourth quarter though and C.V. pulled away to the 8-point win.
Heitman had 10 points to lead Prairie in scoring with VonBargen and Mader scoring 6 points each. Schlader scored 5 and Kendal Schumacher scored 3.
Prairie had a 47-44 rebounding edge with 3 players in double figures in rebounds as Schlader had 14, Schumacher 13 and VonBargen 11.
Schlader had 4 steals and Schumacher, Schlader and Mader had 2 assists each.
Prairie was 12 for 45 from the field, 27%, and 6 for 28 at the line, 21%. C.V. was 12 for 58 from the field, 21%, and 14 for 27 at the line, 52%.
The JV’s had 28 turnovers in the game.
