Summit in District finals
It was not to be, evidently, as Summit Academy’s volleyball dropped two hard-fought matches during the district finals night to end their season one match short of a trip to state in play at Nezperce Wednesday, Oct. 20.
The first Summit game against Nezperce caught the Patriots totally off guard, as serves would not fall, spikes hit the net, and digs went out of bounds resulting in a lopsided 25-7 loss in the game. Summit however did get their act together in the second and third games, playing some of their best of the year but still dropping games two and three by scores of 17-25 and 22-25.
The loss by Summit was followed immediately by a loser out rematch between the Patriots and Highland, who had eliminated Timberline in the final match on Monday after losing to the Patriots. Fate dealt a losing hand to the Patriots this time though as their game definitely let down after two close losses to Nezperce.
With only three missed serves the entire Nezperce contest, Summit missed 3 or 4 serves in each game to lose another marathon 5-game match b scores of 22-25, 25-21, 25-15, 14-25 and 12-15.
The loss ended the season for Summit, recording six wins for the best volleyball record ever, and holding out high hopes for next year with the loss of only two seniors, Jamie Chmelik and Rachel Wemhoff, from this year’s squad.
The win by Highland entitled them to travel to Cascade on Saturday where their season also ended abruptly as they fell to Tri-Valley, the third place team from District 4.
Savanah Prigge bumps the ball over the net in the District championship match against Nezperce. Watching are Cassidy Stubbers and Brooke Schumacher.
Jamie Chmelik sets the ball as Rachel Wemhoff watches as Summit played Nezperce at District.
