23 out for girls basketball
The Prairie High School girls basketball season gets underway this Friday, Nov. 12 with a non-league game at Nezperce.
New Prairie head coach Lori Mader has 23 girls on the team this year, 11 on the varsity and 12 on the JV.
Returning seniors are Kayla Johnson, Haleigh Schmidt and Meaghan Bruner.
Returning juniors are Megan Sigler and MaKayla Schaeffer. A junior transfer from Grangeville is MeShel Rad.
Sophomores on the varsity are Tanna Schlader, Taylor Heitman, Kendall Schumacher, Callie Mader and Shelby VonBargen.
Mader said she has a good mix of height and quickness and feels the team should be competitive in the league this year though you have to consider Lapwai and C.V. as the favorites.
2 teams advance to state this year with the third place team traveling to St. Maries for a play-in game. Mader said she feels Prairie should be in contention for one of those spots.
Mader was also getting some experienced help at Monday’s practice as Chuck Mader and Lanny Wilson were help teach the girls.
Sarah Walsh returns as the JV coach this year and has 3 juniors, 3 sophomores and 6 freshmen on the squad. Juniors are Jenny Gimmeson, Sam Keating and Demetria Riener. Sophomores are Kayla Frei, Tyler Workman and Stephanie Gimmeson. Freshmen are Daun Hoene, Leah Holthaus, Jacey Langston, Keeley Schmidt, Beka Bruner and Shaney Perrin.

The PHS varsity girls run through a drill. Former boys coach Chuck Mader can be seen helping out. New head coach Lori Mader is in the blue shirt in the foreground.

The girls run an inbounds play as Tanna Schlader takes the pass. Also shown on the court from left are coach Lori Mader, Chuck Mader, Shelby VonBargen and Kendall Schumacher.
