Summit girls finish 8-3 against White Pine League
Summit’s girls completed their second full year as members of Central Idaho’s White Pin League with victories over Highland/Culdesac and Deary last week. Overall the Patriots stand at 12-6 for the season and 8-3 in the league with two games remaining, both non-league matchups.
They played Timberline at PHS this past Tuesday and then a final game at Kamiah on Jan. 31. Summit’s JV’s will play both these nights and will add another versus Orofino on Friday of this week.
At Highland last Thursday, the Patriots ripped out to a 27-4 first quarter lead, then cruised to additional quarter scores of 35-14, 59-21 and finally 65-26 with JVs playing about a third of the game.
Scoring and rebounding for the Patriots: Jamie Chmelik 6 and 3; Nicole Frei 4 and 3; Rachael Frei 4 and 5; Sarah Chmelik 4 and 2; Rachel Wemhoff 11 and 4, Nicole Wemhoff 4 and 4, Brooke Schumacher 10 and 5, Savanah Prigge 16 and 5 and Megan Rehder 6 and 7. Assist leaders included Rachel Wemhoff with 5, Schumacher with 4, Prigge and Jamie Chmelik with 3 and Nicole Wemhoff with 2. Rachel Wemhoff and Jamie Chmelik led the steals stats with 4 each.
This victory leaves Summit at 4-2 in 1-A, Division I, both losses coming to first-place Nezperce.
At Deary Saturday, the Patriots left with two wins, the JVs coming out on top 22-14, despite playing with only 4 players at the end, starter Sarah Chmelik fouling out early in the final quarter with Summit leading only 16-14. The win gives the young Patriots a 10-3 season record to date, with three games remaining: Timberline, Orofino and Kamiah.
In the main event, the Patriots had one of their best games of the season, hitting on all cylinders while shooting 61% from the field and establishing leads of 20-12, 29-21, 49-26 and an ending score of 61-27. The win, a White Pine match, gave Summit an 8-3 overall league final record with the losses coming to Lapwai, C.V. and Nezperce.
Scoring and rebounding for the game: Jamie Chmelik 12 and 3, Nicole Frei 2 and 1; Kayla Duclos 2 and 0, Rachel Frei 0 and 0, Sarah Chmelik 2 and 3; Rachel Wemhoff 21 and 6, Nicole Wemhoff 2 and 0, Schumacher 4 and 1, Prigge 16 and 7 and Rehder 0 and 0.

Summit boys lose three games
Exciting, but still winless in league competition, Summit Academy’s young 7-member varsity found themselves on the losing end of three straight games this past week, losing to Prairie on Tuesday (details on Prairie's boys sports page), Lapwai on Thursday and Logos of Moscow on Saturday, dropping their season record to 2-11 with a White Pine record of 0-8.
No final score is available at this time for the Lapwai game but the final score against Logos was 37-58. Both games saw the Patriots hanging tough for about one quarter, then falling prey to fatigue and turnovers in fastpaced games that saw the Summit opponents pull steadily ahead.
Steady improvement has been seen in the young Patriot bunch however with the two frosh, Michael Waters and Matthew Schwartz, and the two sophs, Dan Wemhoff and Shane Stubbers, playing good defense and contributing their share of scoring and rebounding.
Rounding out the 7-menber squad are juniors Austin Chmelik, Derek Nuxoll and David Waters, all of whom have played hard on defense and on the boards, but have yet to hit their peak offensively.
Individual scoring for the Lapwai game is also unavailable but in the Logos game scoring is as follows: Michael Waters 21, Shane Stubbers 7, Austin Chmelik 5, Derek Nuxoll 2, Matthew Schwartz 2.
Upcoming games for the Patriot boys: Timberline, here at PHS on Tuesday, at Genesee on Thursday, at Orofino on Friday and home against Kendrick on Saturday at PHS to round out a torrid week.
Following this week the boys will have only 4 remaining games on their schedule before beginning 1A-Division II district competition.
