Schaeffer, Heath each win two events
MaKayla Schaeffer and Brock Heath each won two events at the Regional Track Meet as Prairie had state qualifiers in 7 individual events and 3 relays. The meet was held at Kootenai High School Friday and Saturday, May 13-14.MaKayla Schaeffer soars towards the pit in the triple jump where she broke the school record Friday to win the District Championship in the event.
Schaeffer broke the school record to win the triple jump with a mark of 34’4¼”. That broke the record of 33’3” by more than a foot that had been set by April Riener in 1992. She also had a personal best in the long jump of 16’7¼” to win that event.
Heath won both the 3200 and 1600 in times of 10:44.0 and 4:54.83 respectively.
Also winning a district title was the boys medley relay team of Josh Roeper, Dakota Wilson, Justin Schmidt and Heath. They had a season best time of 3:49.67.
Other state qualifiers for the boys team were Josh Roeper in the shot put where he placed third with a personal best mark of 38’11” and Josh Zigler in the discus where he placed third with a mark of 113’9”.
Also qualifying for state for the girls was Demetria Riener who placed 5th in the shot put at 31’0” and made it to state as a bubble qualifier. She also placed 8th in the discus at 86’2”.
The girls also qualified both the 4x200 and 4x400 relays. Keely Schmidt, Shelby VonBargen, Claire Whitley and Schaeffer made up both teams.
The top 4 individuals and top 2 relays in each event qualify for state although there are also a couple of wild card spots where the best non-qualifying marks can still make it in.
Just missing out on qualifying for state was Justin Schmidt in the triple jump. He had a mark of 39’4¾” to place sixth. The fifth place finisher qualified for state with a mark of 39’6½”. He also placed 6th in the long jump with a personal best mark of 18’7¾”.
Roeper also took 18th in the discus at 94’11”.
Zigler also took 8th in the shot put at 36’4”.
Josh Schlader took 14th in the shot at 35’0” and 10th in the discus at 101’11”.
Kyle Uhlenkott was 14th in the discus at 98’2”.
Seth Chaffee was 26th in the shot put at 30’6” and 33rd in the discus at 73’7”.
Drew Cochran was 14th in the triple jump at 33’3½”, 14th in the 1600 in 5:45.37 and 18th in the 300 hurdles at 51.17.
Wilson was 15th in the 100 in 12.30.
Brock Heath celebrates as he crosses the finish line first in the medley relay. He teamed with Josh Roeper, Dakota Wilson and Justin Schmidt in the event. Heath also won the 3200 and 1600.Dylon Bruegeman was 15th in the 1600 in 5:49.53, 23rd in the 300 hurdles in 55.09 and 34th in the 100 in 13.35.
Sidney Camara was 20th in the long jump at 14’10”, 21st in the 200 in 28.50 and 33rd in the 100 in 13.33.
Neto Pereira was 21st in the 400 in 1:05.19 and 24th in the 200 in 28.93.
The 4x100 relay team of Bruegeman, Camara, Wilson and Cochran placed 6th in 52.88 and the 4x200 team of Roeper, Wilson, Heath and Schmidt placed 4th in 1:41.72.
For the girls team Whitley placed 6th in the 300 hurdles in 55.07.
Brandi Gehring was 9th in the 100 hurdles in 18.49 and 9th in the high jump at 4’2”.
Rachel Falzon was 10th in the long jump at 11’10”, 13th in the 100 hurdles in 20.97, 14th in the 100 in 15.12 and 12th in the 200 in 31.94.
Tyler Workman was 11th in the 200 in 31.32, 13th in the 100 in 14.88 and 15th in the triple jump at 26’4½”.
Taylor Heitman was 13th in the shot put at 25’1” and 14th in the discus at 67’1”.
Stephanie Gimmeson was 10th in the discus at 80’ and 19th in the shot put at 23’9”.
The medley relay team of Gehring, Whitley, Schmidt and VonBargen was 4th in the 2:01.87 and the 4x100 team of Schmidt, Gehring, Workman and VonBargen was 5th in 56.51.
As a team the boys placed 6th out of 15 schools with 57 points and the girls were 4th out of 16 schools with 53 points.
Josh Roeper set a personal best in the shot put to place third and qualify for State.
Keely Schmidt hands off to Shelby VonBargen in the medley relay. They finished 4th in the medley but were part of the state qualifying 4x100 and 4x200 relays.
Justin Schmidt turns the baton over to Brock Heath in the medley relay in second place. Heath was able to run down the Lapwai runner to finish first.


State Track Schedule
The state track meet is set for this Friday and Saturday, May 20-21, at Bronco Stadium at Boise State University.
The 3200 meter run finals start at 9:30 a.m. Friday, May 20 with the 3A girls final. Prairie’s Brock Heath will be in the 6th race of the morning.
At 10:30 a.m. Prairie’s field event athletes will start to see action. MaKayla Schaeffer in the girls’ triple jump, Josh Zigler in the boys’ discus and Demetria Riener in the girls’ shot put will see their events start at 10:30. Zigler and Riener are in the first flight of their events while Schaeffer is in the second flight.
At 1 p.m. Josh Roeper will start competition in the boys shot put. He is in the first flight.
Schaeffer’s long jump competition won’t be held until Saturday morning. The first flight starts at 8:30 a.m. She is in the second flight.
The only running action for Prairie on Saturday after Heath’s 3200 will be the boys medley final, which will be the final event of the afternoon before the Parade of Athletes, which is set for 4:45 p.m.
Running finals start at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday with the girls 4x200 and 4x100 relays and Heath again in the 1600 final taking place during the day.


Jr. High girls 2nd, boys 3rd at league meet
The Prairie Junior High Track team competed at the White Pine League Championships Tuesday, May 10 at Lapwai with the girls team placing 2nd and the boys 3rd out of 5 schools competing.
Heidi Holubetz took first place in both the shot put and discus at 31’4” and 72’ respectively while Krystin Uhlenkott won the 400 meters in 1:08.53 and Sydney Glimp won the triple Jump at 28’10½”. Also the 4x200 relay team of Kellie Heitman, Natasha Gimmeson, Shayla VonBargen and Uhlenkott took first in 2:06.57.
For the boys Justin Ross won both the 800 in 2:29.13 and the 1600 in 5:24.96. Also the 4x100 relay team of Brandon Higgins, Victor Schmidt, Bryson Higgins and Jake Bruner took 1st in 57.68.
Also for the girls team Uhlenkott took 2nd in the long jump at 12’4”.
Heitman was 2nd in the 200 in 31.59 and 6th in the long jump at 10’7½”.
Glimp also took 3rd in the 800 in 2:57.44.
Gimmeson was 5th in the 200 in 33.16 and 5th in the long jump at 11’4½”.
VonBargen was 2nd in the high jump at 4’0”.
Jessi Riener took 2nd in the shot put at 28’7” and 5th in the discus at 56’4”.
Beth Dinning took 2nd in the discus at 66’6” and 5th in the shot put at 25’2”.
Whitney Sonnen took 3rd in the discus at 65’8”, 3rd in the shot put at 28’5” and 16th in the 100 in 19.75.
Emily McHugh took 7th in the discus at 46’9” and 8th in the shot put at 22’6”.
The 4x100 relay team of Heitman, Gimmeson, Glimp and VonBargen took 2nd in 1:01.4 and the team of Dinning, Riener, McHugh and Holubetz took 4th in 1:07.49.
The 4x400 team of VonBargen, Glimp, Holbetz and Uhlenkott took 2nd in 5:23.48.
Also for the boys team Hunter McWilliams took 2nd in the 1600 in 5:55.14; 4th in the 200 hurdles in 34.53, and 2nd in the triple jump at 28’7”.
Austin Sonnen was third in the 100 in 13.39, 4th in the 400 meters in 1:07.88, 7th in the shot put at 28’6” and 6th in the discus at 79’1”.
Ross was also 8th in the 100 in 14.15.
Isaiah Shears was 9th in the 100 in 14.37, tied for 7th in the 200 in 31.48 and 10th in the discus at 72’2”.
Bruner was 6th in the shot put at 29’3”, 7th in the discus at 77’6” and tied for 7th in the 200 in 31.48.
Dally Ratcliff was 5th in the 800 in 2:55.57, 6th in the 1600 in 6:56.54, 7th in the 200 hurdles in 40.11 and 7th in the triple jump at 22’4”.
Schmidt was 6th in the long jump at 13’4”, 5th in the discus at 83’2”, and 12th in the 100 in 14.57.
Brandon Higgins was 14th in the 100 in 15.13,and 9th in the long jump at 12’0”.
Bryson Higgins was 4th in the 200 in 29.66 and 7th in the long jump at 13’1”.
Trevor Shipley was 10th  in the long jump at 11’8”, 7th in the 400 in 1:13.45 and 15th in the 200 in 37.23.
Andrew Geis was 16th in the 100 in 15.72 and 10th in the 75 meter hurdles in 16.18.
Bobby Gillum was 21st in the 100 in 21.16, 16th in the 200 in 50.42 and 16th in the discus at 55’4”.
The medley relay team of Bryson Higgins, Brandon Higgins, Schmidt and McWilliams took 2nd in 2:13.52.
There was also a second 4x100 team that placed 5th in 1:07.44, no names available.
