girls beat Lapwai in 5 games
Hosting Lapwai in a White Pine League match Thursday, Sept. 29 at the old Prairie Elementary gym produced a league win for the Summit varsity and a 3-set loss for the JVís in an exciting evening of volleyball which began with a 20-minute delay finding adequate padding for the game officialís stand.
In the prelim Megan Rehder went a perfect 11 for 11 at the service line, while scoring 6 points including one ace while Courtney Schwartz and Julia Osborne led the team in the digs and kills department. Scores for the three games were 13-25, 21-25 and 8-15.
In the wild varsity match following, summit dropped games one and three 26-28 and 23-25 but rallied to win games two and four, both by 25-19 scores. The tie breaker was a tense one with Summit pulling out to an early lead, then watching Lapwai roar back aided by two Summit missed serves. Summit pulled back ahead at the end to take the match 15-11. The win gave the Patriots a 5-4 league record and an 8-7 record overall for the season with 3 matches remaining on the schedule.
All six Patriots played well for the evening with Savanah Prigge and Kayla Schumacher leading the team in kills with 23 and 17, set up well by Nicole Frei and Brooke Schumacherís well-set assists. Nicole had 19 and Brooke had 32.
At the service line Kayla Schumacher served a perfect 25 for 25 including 17 scoring serves with 4 aces. Her sister Brooke Schumacher scored 21 points including 2 aces and was also 25 for 25 for the evening. Sophomore Rachael Frei added 10 points including 5 aces while missing only 2 of her 15 serves. Fellow sophomore Nicole Wemhoff contributed 7 digs and several excellent passes.
Summit has 3 games remaining. They were at Deary this past Tuesday. Senior night will be against Kendrick Thursday, Oct. 6 at Prairie High School. Their final match will be against Orofino with district play set for LCSC starting Oct. 15.
