Lady Pirates shut down Potlatch
The Prairie Lady Pirates shut out Potlatch in both the first and fourth quarters  and cruised to a 45-12 win in their White Pine League opener Tuesday, Nov. 29 at Cottonwood.Megan Sigler takes an elbow to the face in the Potlatch game.
MaKayla Schaeffer and Megan Sigler scored 4 points each while Callie Mader, Tanna Schlader and Kendall Schumacher scored 2 each as Prairie took a 14-0 lead after one quarter of play. Potlatch wound up 0 for 9 from the field in the quarter.
In the second quarter Prairie ran into some shooting difficulties as they connected on just 1 of 10 attempts with Sigler scoring all 4 of Prairie’s points in the period.
Potlatch was able to get on the scoreboard and outscored Prairie in the quarter but still trailed 18-6 at the half.
Prairie opened the third quarter with a 12-0 run as MeShel Rad scored all 7 of her points in the game in that run.
Prairie led 34-12 after 3 quarters.
On occasion you’ll see a team shut out in a quarter of play but in this game Prairie shut out Potlatch in two periods as Prairie outscored Potlatch 11-0 in the fourth period.
Sigler wound up with 13 points to lead Prairie in scoring while Rad scored 7, Schlader 6, Schaeffer, Schumacher and Shelby Von Bargen 4 each, Leah Holthaus 3 and Mader and Tyler Workman 2 each.
Prairie also outrebounded the Loggers 42-36 with Rad pulling down 10 rebounds to lead the team. Sigler added 7 rebounds while Schumacher had 6.
Mader had 3 steals while Sigler and Schaeffer had 2 each. Schlader had 4 assists with Sigler adding 3.
Prairie was 18 for 52 from the field, 35%, and 8 for 14 at the line, 57%. Potlatch was 6 for 44 from the field, 14%, and attempted no free throws.
With the win Prairie is 5-1 overall and 1-0 in league play.
In the JV game a 16-0 run that started late in the first half and carried through most of the third quarter allowed Prairie to break open a close game and win 35-24.
Keely Schmidt scored 6 points in the first quarter to lead Prairie to a 10-4 advantage by the break.
Potlatch responded in the second quarter and were able to tie the game at 12 with 2:22 left. That would be the last Potlatch scoring for over 9 minutes of playing time.
A steal by Schmidt led to a basket by Leah Holthaus that gave Prairie the lead. Beka Bruner added a putback to give Prairie a 16-12 halftime led.
Schmidt scored Prairie’s first 6 points of the third quarter and Holthaus added 2 more as Prairie pushed the lead to 28-12 before Potlatch could finally scored again with 1:06 left in the quarter. That was just a single free throw as Prairie outscored the Loggers 12-1 in the period.
Potlatch was able to outscored Prairie in the fourth quarter 7-11 to cut the final margin to 11.
Schmidt had 13 points to lead the team in scoring with Holthaus adding 8. Bruner and Shaney Perrin added 4 points each while Daun Hoene, Stephanie Gimmeson and Ali Hoene added 2 each.
Prairie had a 39-31 rebounding edge led by Bruner with 10. Perrin added 8 rebounds and Daun Hoene had 7.
Schmidt had 6 steals while Holthaus and Daun Hoene had 4 each. Perrin had 3 assists to lead the team.
Prairie was 16 for 55 from the field, 29%, and 3 for 10 at the line, 30%. Potlatch was 10 for 34 from the field, 29%, and 2 for 8 at the line, 25%.
Prairie also won the C game by a score of 49-15.

Lady Pirates beat Grangeville
TIn the opening game of the third annual Idaho County Shootout the Prairie Lady Pirates picked up their first win over Grangeville since the 2001-02 season, 52-37 at Cottonwood Friday, Dec. 2.
MeShel Rad heads upcourt after stealing the ball against Grangeville. At left is Megan Sigler.Megan Sigler opened the scoring with a 3-pointer to give Prairie a lead they never surrendered. She added a short baseline shot and another 3-pointer as Prairie jumped out to an 11-2 lead.
A putback by Shelby VonBargen and a basket by MaKayla Schaeffer helped Prairie to a 15-8 lead at the end of the quarter.
An 8-3 run to open the second quarter pushed the lead to 12 points. MeShel Rad had a pair of baskets in that run and Callie Mader and Schaeffer each scored a basket. Schaeffer’s came after escaping from a double-team Grangeville had on her along the sideline.
By halftime Prairie had pushed the lead to 33-17 with VonBargen capping the scoring in the half when she rebounded a missed free throw and put it back in the final 5 seconds.
Grangeville was able to cut the lead down to 10 in the third quarter at 35-25 but Prairie closed out the quarter with an 8 straight points and scored the first 4 of the fourth quarter to complete a 12-0 run to give Prairie their biggest lead at 46-25.
Grangeville answered with 5 straight but Schaeffer then made a pretty drive to the hoop for a lay-up.
Prairie added a pair of free throws by Rad and a single free throw by Mader to win by 15.
Schaeffer wound up as the leading scorer with 16 points while Sigler, who was fighting illness, wound up with 12. Rad scored 9, VonBargen 8, Mader 5 and Kendall Schumacher 2.
Prairie held a 39-30 rebounding edge led by Rad with 16. VonBargen and Tanna Schlader had 6 rebounds each.
Schaeffer had 5 steals while Schlader and Rad had 3 each. Rad, Sigler and Schlader had 3 assists each.
Prairie was 19 for 52 from the field, 37%, and 12 for 20 at the line, 60%. Grangeville was 15 for 41 from the field, 37%, and 5 for 7 at the line, 71%.
With the win Prairie improves to 6-1 on the season.
