Lady Pirates beat Deary, Nezperce
The Prairie Lady Pirates picked up a pair of wins in the past week, winning a league game at Deary 38-17 Tuesday, Jan. 10, and a non-league game at Nezperce 55-38 Friday, Jan. 13.Shelby VonBargen tries to pass around a Deary defender as Megan Sigler looks on.
The game at Deary was not an artistic masterpiece by any means. Prairie struggled with their shooting on offense but their defense bailed them out by shutting down the Mustangs.
Prairie hit just 2 of 10 shots from the field in the opening quarter and 6 of 13 free throws but took an 11-2 lead as they held Deary to just 1 for 9 in the quarter.
In the second quarter Megan Sigler hit a pair of 3-pointers to go with the one she had in the first quarter as she outscored Deary all be herself in the first half 11-7. Her third 3-pointer of the game made it 18-2. Deary outscored Prairie 3-5 the rest of the half but still trailed 21-7.
Prairie outscored the Mustangs 11-4 in the third quarter and led 32-9 at one point. Five different players scored a basket for Prairie in the quarter with MeShel Rad adding a free throw.
Subs saw most of the action in the fourth quarter with Deary finally managing to outscore Sigler when they scored with 49 seconds left.
Sigler scored 13 to lead Prairie in scoring. Rad scored 5 with Tanna Schlader, MaKayla Schaeffer and Kendall Schumacher adding 4 each and Shelby VonBargen, Callie Mader, Tyler Workman and Leah Holthaus 2 each.
Deary held the rebounding edge at 34-40. Rad and Schlader had 7 rebounds each to lead the team with Schaeffer adding 6.
Rad and Mader had 5 steals each while 6 different players had 1 assist each.
Prairie was 12 for 47 from the field, 26%, and 11 for 24 at the line, 46%. Deary was 6 for 31 from the field, 19%, and 5 for 11 at the line, 46%.
In the JV game Prairie took an 8-0 lead after one quarter and led 19-8 at the half on the way to a 46-16 blowout win.
They got the offense really cranked up in the third quarter as they outscored Deary 23-4. Leah Holthaus scored 9 points in the quarter and Beka Bruner added 8 as they combined to go 8 for 8 in the quarter.
Keely Schmidt wound up leading the team with 10 points with Holthaus and Bruner scoring 9 each. Sky Wilson added 8 points with Daun Hoene, Shaney Perrin, Cassidy Stubbers and Kellie Heitman scoring 2 each and Abi Chmelik and Whitney Sonnen 1 each.

In the game at Nezperce an 11-3 run to end the first half broke open a close game.
Prairie actually jumped out on top 10-1 behind a 3-pointer by Sigler and 5 points from MeShel Rad. Nezperce though rallied back to within 2 by the end of the first Megan Sigler knocks the ball loose from Nezperce’s Arika Arnzen and turned the steal into 2 points on the other end.quarter as Jerrica Leitch hit a pair of 3-pointers. Another 3 by Sigler were Prairie’s only points in Nezperce’s 3-10 run to end the quarter.
Sigler scored 11 points in the second quarter despite taking an ugly spill after making one lay-up following a steal. She slipped after making the lay-up and crashed into the padding on the front of the stage. After laying there for a bit she got up and stayed in the game, adding 5 more points in the rest of the half.
Prairie led just 23-19 with 3:36 left in the half. A 3-point play by Sigler after Rad knocked the ball loose on the defensive end was answered by a 3-pointer by Leitch but Prairie scored the final 8 points to take a 34-22 halftime lead.
Prairie then opened the third quarter with an 8-0 run followed by a 7-0 run after a Nezperce basket to take a 49-24 lead late in the third quarter.
Nezperce scored the final 3 points of the quarter and the first 8 of the fourth quarter to pull within 14 at 49-35 before Mader hit a free throw.
A basket by Nezperce got them within 13 but that was as close as they would get as Sigler scored a basket and 3 free throws to push the lead back to 18.
Sigler wound up with 24 points to lead the Pirates in scoring with Rad adding 16. Schlader and VonBargen scored 6 each and Mader scored 3.
Rebounding was even at 24 each. Schlader had 10 to lead Prairie with Rad adding 7 rebounds.
Sigler had 4 steals while Rad, Schaeffer and Schlader had 3 each. Schlader and Schaeffer had 4 assists each.
Prairie was 18 for 35 from the field, 51%, and 14 for 31 at the line, 45%. Nezperce was 14 for 31 from the field, 45%, and 5 for 12 at the line, 42%.
With the two wins Prairie improves to 13-3 overall and 5-1 in league play. The Deary win clinched the #2 seed into district as they have just 1 league game remaining and have the head-to-head tiebreaker against Troy.
In the JV game Prairie played one of their worst games all year as they lost 9-20 in a two-quarter game.
Prairie connected on just 4 of 26 shots, 15%, and committed 17 turnovers in just 2 quarters of action. They were 0 for 7 at the free throw line.
Keely Schmidt scored 4 to lead the team with Sky Wilson scoring 3 on a 3-pointer and Daun Hoene scored the other 2 points.
Nezperce held a slim 24-25 rebounding edge. Leah Holthaus, Bruner and Hoene had 6 rebounds each to lead Prairie.
Wilson had 4 steals and Schmidt and Ali Hoene each had 1 assist.
Nezperce was 6 for 23 from the field, 26%, and 6 for 16 at the line, 38%.
