Summit girls advance to title game
The Summit Lady Patriots held on through a rough and tumble game against Nezperce Monday, Feb. 6 at Lapwai, winning 40-29 to advance to the District Championship game Friday, Feb. 10 at 6 p.m.
Nicole Frei shoots against Highland at District. Also shown are Kayla Duclos and Megan Seubert.Nezperce, coming off a 1-point victory over Summit in the regular season closer, fell behind, caught up and trailed just 21-19 at the end of the third quarter.
Summit pulled away in the fourth though outscoring the Indians 18-10 to drop the Indians into the loser’s bracket. Summit would have to lose both Friday and Saturday to Nezperce to avoid making another trip to state.
With Nezperce double and even triple-teaming on some occasions Summit post Savanah Prigge in the first half, Brooke Schumacher came on strong, hitting 4 of 6 shots in the first quarter which along with Rachael Frei’s 2 free throws gave Summit a 10-4 first quarter lead. Suffocating defense by the Patriots also contributed. Prigge was held without a shot attempt in the first half.
Nezperce picked up the offensive pace in the second quarter however as frosh Kamas Carpenter scored 8 for the Indians, including two threes to cut the Summit lead to 18-14 at the half.
A slow third quarter in which the teams combined for just 8 points, was followed by a frantic fourth as Nezperce resorted to a full-court press to attempt to rally from their deficit. It backfired on them though as point guard Nicole Wemhoff and Brooke Schumacher continually broke the press. The press also backfired in that it freed up Prigge who was able to do damage off the press break and scored 11 points in the crucial fourth quarter.
Points, rebounds, assists and steals for Summit: Rachael Frei 6, 2, 1, 1; Nicole Frei 0, 6, 0, 0 with much time on the bench in foul trouble; Sarah Chmelik 0, 1, 0, 0; Kayla Schumacher 5, 4, 2, 2; Wemhoff 3, 3, 2, 2; Brooke Schumacher 12, 5, 4, 3; and Prigge 14, 11, 0, 0 and 3 blocked shots.
Summit will await the victor of Wednesday’s loser-out matchup between Nezperce and Timberline.
If Summit should happen to lose Friday’s game a winner-take-all game will be played Saturday at 1 p.m.  Only the district winner advances to state, which will be Feb. 16-18 at Nampa High School.

Summit boys fall to Potlatch

Garcia had 10 of Potlatch’s 19 first quarter points. He added 8 more in the second as Potlatch extended their lead to 18-32 by halftime.
In the third quarter Garcia scored Potlatch’s first 12 third quarter points to keep Summit at bay. Michael Waters scored 5 and David Waters 3 in the quarter to help keep the Patriots from falling any farther behind. They still trailed by 16 heading into the final period.
