4 earn state medals
Four of Prairie’s 7 wrestlers competing at the State Wrestling Meet brought home medals, 3 fourths and a fifth.
The meet was held at Holt Arena in Pocatello Feb. 24-25.
Hunter McWilliams earned a 4th place medal at 120 lbs. Alex Duman placed 4th at 126 lbs. and Kade Perrin placed fourth at 138 lbs. Garrett Schmidt placed 5th at 195 lbs.

113 lbs.-Dally Ratcliff scored a reversal in the final seconds to win an 8-6 decision over Jace Wilding of Firth. In the quarterfinals he lost 4-13 to Wesley Peterson of Malad. In the consolation round he won by pin in the third period over Austin Anderson of Aberdeen. In the consolation quarterfinals, where a win clinches a medal, he lost by pin in the second period to Frankie Juarez of Declo.
113 lbs.-Tyler Ross lost 8-18 to Derek Checketts of Malad in the first round. In the first round of consolation he won by pin in the third period over Vladi Garcia of Valley. In the second consolation round he lost by first period pin to Juarez of Declo.
120 lbs.-Hunter McWilliams took just 1:24 to score a first round pin over Colton Rose of Raft River. In the quarterfinals he won by pin again in 2:48 over Carl Campbell of West Jefferson. In the semifinals he ran up against #1 seeded Dan Blaisdell of Malad, who wound up taking 2nd place, and lost by technical fall 0-15. In the consolation semifinals he had a tough match with Carson Roberts of West Side. Hunter scored a first round takedown but Roberts tied it in the third period with a reversal. With the score still 2-2, Hunter scored an escape with 19 seconds left to pull out a 3-2 win. In the 3rd place match he faced Matt Newman of Declo who dominated the action and won 3-8 leaving McWilliams with the 4th place medal.
120 lbs.-Justin Ross had a tough tournament as he faced 3rd seeded T.J. Thacker of Ririe and lost by pin in 41 seconds. Thacker went on to win the championship. In the first consolation round he faced Santos Ponce of Gooding and lost by pin in the third period.
126 lbs.-Alex Duman opened against Rylie Clemens of Firth and won by pin in the second period. In the second round he faced Dakota Stallions of New Plymouth and wound up losing a tough 5-8 decision. In the consolation bracket he faced Brad Gerratt of Valley and won an 11-4 decision. In the consolation quarterfinals he faced Shad Cordingly of North Fremont. After a scoreless first period, Duman took a 4-3 lead by the end of the second period. Cordingly tied it with a late reversal to send the match into overtime. Duman scored a takedown in overtime to win 9-7 and clinch a medal. In the consolation semifinals he faced Casey Clark of McCall-Donnelly. After a scoreless first period he dominated the second, taking a 6-0 lead, and then won by pin in the third period to advance to the third place match. In the consolation final he faced Stallions again and had no better luck then the first time, losing 3-8 to take 4th place.
138 lbs.-Kade Perrin faced Quinn Eliason of Malad in the opening round and won a 9-3 decision. In the quarterfinals he faced Josh Phillips of Declo and the match was tied at 2-2 after 2 periods. Perrin took the down position to start the third period, scored an escape and then a takedown to take a 5-2 lead and eventually won 5-3. In the semifinals he faced eventual champion and #1 seeded Jared Johnshoy of Melba and was dominated in a 9-16 loss. In the consolation semifinals he again faced Eliason and won a much tougher 3-0 decision. He scored all 3 points in the second period on an escape and takedown and was able to ride out the third period for the win. In the consolation final he faced Justin Williams of North Gem. After a scoreless first period, Perrin was in the up position to start the second and Williams scored an escape. Perrin started the third period in the down position and tied the match with an escape. The rest of the period he tried to shoot on Williams for the takedown but Williams kept backing away and could have been charged with a stalling point after an earlier warning but wasn’t and the match wound up going into overtime where Williams was able to score a takedown and win 1-3 with Perrin taking the 4th place medal.
195 lbs.-In his third appearance at state, Garrett Schmidt finally picked up his first win and took only 9 seconds to do it as he pinned Matt Workman of Aberdeen. In the quarterfinals against Kaleb Orchard of Ririe he faced a much stiffer challenge. He led 3-2 after the first period but trailed 3-4 after the second. He scored an escape in the third period to tie the match at 4-4 but neither wrestler could score after that and the match went to overtime. With 3 seconds left in the overtime period Schmidt was able to score a takedown and clinch a medal, 6-4. In the semifinals against Todd Allen of McCall-Donnelly, the #2 seed who would wind up taking second, he fell behind early on and wound up getting pinned in the second period. In the consolation semifinals he faced Eric Finley of Gooding and wound up getting pinned in the second period. In the 5th place match all he had to do was walk to the center of the ring to get his hand raised as his opponent, Rhett Moore of Soda Springs, was injured in his consolation semifinal match and was unable to continue.
As a team Prairie place 14th with 65 points and was third among 1-A schools behind Challis and North Gem, who were 4th and 13th overall. They finished just 4 points behind North Gem.
