Translator system to add channels
If you live in the Camas Prairie area and watch television using an antenna, you now have more viewing choices thanks to work on the new digital translator system on Cottonwood Butte. KSPS Public Television is now available in High Definition.
Camas Prairie over-the-air viewers should rescan or auto-tune your digital TV or digital converter box to pick up the new channels.
Work is still in progress at the translator site. For now, you can pick up KSPS HD plus KREM(CBS Spokane), KHQ(NBC Spokane) and KLEW(CBS Lewiston) in SD.  When the transmitter system is finished in the next few weeks, viewers will be able to receive 10 digital channels instead of the five analog channels that were previously available. These will include KXLY(ABC Spokane), KAYU (Fox Spokane), KSPS Create, KSPS World, and secondary channels being broadcast by all of the stations. Funding for this project came from a grant by the National Telecommunications Information Agency, a federal program set up to help upgrade low-power translators.
The site was previously managed by the non-profit Central Idaho TV, Inc. which was established in 1956 to bring the first television signals to the Camas Prairie.  The chief engineer since that first transmission has been Ralph Mathison of Craigmont. Ralph and other volunteers worked for decades to keep the translators running, bringing countless hours of television entertainment and news to viewers in the region. Mathison is retiring from these duties and Central Idaho TV, Inc. is dissolving.
“We are grateful to Ralph Mathison and the other CITV volunteers for their dedication,” said KSPS General Manager Claude Kistler. “To keep great television coming into Camas Prairie homes for 56 years is an incredible accomplishment.”
KSPS Public Television is now managing the Cottonwood Butte site on behalf of the region’s viewers. If you have any questions or need any help to get the new channels, please call KSPS at 800-735-2377 and ask for an engineer. They’ll be happy to help.
