McEwen received his Masters of Physical Therapy from the University of St. Augustine for Health Sciences in St. Augustine Florida in May of 2000 and came to work for St. Mary’s Hospital shortly after that. Heis the Director of Rehabilitation Services for SMH and is primarily based out of the Grangeville Physical Therapy office.  Gary manages both the Grangeville and Cottonwood PT departments and even though he is based out of the Grangeville office he does come to the hospital and the Cottonwood Physical Therapy office on a regular basis to work with patients.
When asked why he went into this profession he stated that he had sustained an ankle injury while in high school that required physical therapy.  He realized how important rehabilitation was in returning full function to this ankle.  “I have always liked human anatomy and physiology and what the body is capable of performing,” remarked McEwen.  “I also like providing wellness solutions for better health.”  Gary started a Wellness Program for the employees of SMH in 2004. “This program helps promote health and wellness for the employees and healthy employees are positive role models for our medical centers and communities,” said McEwen.  “Healthy employees also use fewer health care dollars and they provide better patient care, so the time and effort put into this program is well worth it.”
“The thing I like about my job is that every injury is different and challenging to rehab,” commented McEwen. “I like helping individuals progress through their injury or surgery and return to normal function.”
When not working, Gary likes to spend time outdoors; he participates in triathlons, and enjoys cycling, skiing and exercising.  When he truly wants to just relax, he enjoys reading.
Gary and his wife Lisa live in Grangeville; they have seven children of which four are grown and out of the house and the three youngest boys are still at home.
Gary’s last comment was, “I am proud to work for St. Mary’s Hospital.”
