Summit girls lose twice
The Summit Lady Patriots dropped a pair of games in the Highland Tournament which was held at Craigmont Friday and Saturday, Nov. 16-17.Megan Seubert battles a Highland player for a rebound. At left is Megan Rehder and at right is Rachael Frei.
On Friday led Timberline after 3 quarters but wound up losing 23-34. On Saturday they led in the third quarter but wound up on the short end of a 30-33 score against Highland.
In Friday’s game Summit scored just 1 point in the opening quarter but held Timberline to just 5. They cut the lead in half by halftime as they outscored the Spartans 13-11 in the second quarter.
After a 6-3 third quarter they held a 20-19 lead only to get blown out by the Spartans in the fourth quarter as Summit’s shots just wouldn’t fall.
Megan Rehder scored 9 points to lead the Patriots with Megan Seubert scoring 6, Rachel Waters 4 and Sarah Chmelik and Abi Chmelik 2 each.
In Saturday’s game Highland took a 3-10 lead after one quarter but Summit rallied in the second quarter when the Huskies’ Libby Dietz left the game with foul trouble. Summit finished the half with a 9-2 run to tie the score at 14 at halftime.
Sarah Chmelik scored 4 while Seubert scored 3 in that run.
Summit took their first lead of the game 30 seconds into the third quarter when Rehder hit a 3-pointer.
Except for a tie at 19 they were able to hold the lead for much of the quarter. After a free throw by Rachael Frei made it 21-19, Highland put together a 0-8 run on a putback by Dietz and 2 improbable 3’s by Ashley Hendren. The first was a line-drive missile that would’ve missed if it had caught any iron at all and the second one banked in. All of a sudden Highland was up by 6 points.
Rachel Waters connected on a shot in the final seconds of the quarter to cut the lead to 23-27.
Twice Summit was able to cut the lead to 1 in the final quarter, at 27-28 after a driving lay-up by Sarah Chmelik and again at 29-30 on a lay-up by Frei with 2:36 left.
They couldn’t take back the lead though and Highland made enough free throws to hold off the Patriots.
Rehder again led the scoring with 10 points while Seubert scored 7, Sarah Chmelik 6, Waters 4 and Frei 3.
Highland had a 33-39 rebounding edge with Sarah Chmelik pulling down 11 for the Patriots. Seubert had 8 boards and Frei and Rehder 7 each.
Frei had 5 steals and Abi Chmelik had 4 assists. Rehder and Abi Chmelik each had 3 steals.
Summit was 12 for 42 from the field, 29% and 5 for 12 at the line, 42%. Highland was 12 for 53 from the field, 23%, and 7 for 15 at the line, 47%.
With the losses Summit is 0-2 on the season.
