Summit boys lose twice at Lapwai Tournament
When Timberline had to drop out of the Lapwai Tournament the Summit Academy Patriots were able to step up and fill some of the void. They couldn’t quite get everyone together to play Genesee on Thursday but were able to play Lapwai on Friday and Prairie on Saturday.Josh Lustig managed to get this shot off against Lapwai last Friday. Also shown are Shane Stubbers, 13, and Matthew Schwartz, 42.
Against Lapwai on Friday, Dec. 28, they fell behind by as many as 24 points but rallied to within 6 by the end of the game as they fell 55-61. On Saturday they trailed Prairie by just 2 late in the first half but wound up losing 50-71. See the Prairie boys page for a writeup on that game.
Against Lapwai on Friday the Patriots fell behind 2-7 and 9-13 in the first quarter but were able to tie the game at 13 and again at 15 on baskets by Michael Waters and Nathan Beckman respectively.
After hitting 6 of 8 first quarter shots the Patriots cooled off in the second as they hit just 3 of 11 and Lapwai was able to pull away to a 22-33 halftime lead.
A 2-19 run by the Wildcats in the third quarter seemingly put the game out of reach as Lapwai led 28-52 with 1:52 left in the third quarter.
Summit wasn’t ready to give up though as Waters stole the ball and drove for a lay-up to break the Lapwai run and start a run for Summit.
Josh Lustig hit a 3-pointer and Waters scored a putback to make it 35-52 after 3 quarters.
Another 3 by Lustig, a full-court drive for a lay-up by Waters and 2 free throws by Lustig completed a 14-0 run and cut the lead to 42-52.
Lapwai broke the run with a basket but a putback by Shane Stubbers and a Thomas Schwartz steal that lead to a basket by Lustig cut the lead to 8 at 46-54.
Lapwai scored a couple fo baskets to push the lead to 12 but a basket by Shane Stubbers and a 3-pointer by Matthew Schwartz cut the lead to 7.
A 3-pointer by Lapwai effectively ended it but Summit was able to score the game’s final 4 points on a basket by Waters and 2 free throws by Lustig.
Lustig scored 19 points to lead the Patriots in scoring and nearly had a double-double with 9 rebounds. Shane Stubbers did have a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds. Waters scored 14, Matthew Schwartz 8 and Beckman 4.
Lapwai had just a 34-37 rebounding edge.
Lustig and Matthew Schwartz had 4 assists each while Waters and Matthew Schwartz each had 3 steals.
Summit was 23 for 56 from the field, 41%, and 9 for 12 at the line, 75%. Lapwai was 25 for 59 from the field, 42%, and 6 for 7 at the line, 86%.
